CNC Milling Set-Up Machinist
CNC Milling Set-Up Machinist
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced CNC Milling Set-Up Machinist to set up, align and operate multi-axis CNC milling machines to produce precision components for aerospace, medical device, and defense applications. The role focuses on accurate fixture and tooling set-ups, program verification and editing, adherence to GD&T, and maintaining tight tolerances in a high-quality, regulated manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
-
Set up and align CNC milling machines (including 3-, 4- and 5-axis) for production runs, selecting fixtures, cutting tools and workholding to meet part requirements.
-
Verify and edit CNC programs as needed; perform dry runs and first-article machining to validate program accuracy and tooling strategy.
-
Interpret engineering drawings and specifications, applying GD&T principles to ensure parts meet dimensional and geometric tolerances.
-
Use precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) and inspect parts; coordinate with CMM operators for complex inspections.
-
Troubleshoot machining issues (tool wear, chatter, program errors) and implement corrective actions to minimize scrap and downtime.
-
Document set-up parameters, tooling lists, run times and inspection results; maintain accurate production records and travelers.
-
Collaborate with programmers, quality engineers and production teams to optimize set-ups and improve cycle times while maintaining quality standards.
-
Follow safety protocols, maintain clean work area and perform routine preventive maintenance on machines and tooling.
-
Support continuous improvement initiatives, process documentation and training of junior machinists as required.
Qualifications
-
High school diploma or equivalent; technical certificate or associate degree in machining, manufacturing technology or related field preferred.
-
Minimum 3 years of hands-on CNC milling set-up experience; strong experience with multi-axis milling (3-, 4-, 5-axis) preferred.
-
Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T to tight tolerances.
-
Experience with CNC controls (e.g., FANUC, Haas) and familiarity with CAM systems and part-program editing.
-
Experience in precision manufacturing environments; prior work in aerospace, medical device or defense industries strongly preferred.
-
Proficient with precision measuring instruments and inspection equipment; experience with CMM programming/operation is a plus.
-
Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and commitment to quality and documentation (AS9100/ISO experience a plus).
-
Ability to lift moderate weights, stand for extended periods and work in a shop environment; effective communication and teamwork skills.
Benefits
Competitive compensation and benefits package, career advancement opportunities, and the chance to work in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility within a rapidly growing precision manufacturing organization.
