Athena Drilling is seeking experienced, safety-focused individuals to join our field team as Geotechnical Drill Operator (Crew Chief). In this role, you will be responsible for operating drilling equipment and executing subsurface exploration activities that support the design and construction of critical infrastructure projects across the country.
Working alongside a field team, you will play a key role in performing drilling operations, coordinating day-to-day crew activities on site, and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently. Operate geotechnical drilling equipment safely and efficiently in a variety of field conditions

Perform the setup, operation, and breakdown (mobilization/demobilization) of drill rigs and support equipment

Conduct geotechnical drilling activities, including soil borings, geoprobes, and standard penetration testing (SPT)

Locate boring positions using project plans and field direction

Coordinate daily onsite activities with assigned crew members to complete drilling tasks

Collect soil and rock samples and ensure proper handling and labeling

Accurately complete drilling logs, field reports, and daily documentation

Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on drill rigs and support vehicles

Follow and enforce OSHA and company safety standards in daily work activities

Communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, and field personnel as needed

Monitor site conditions and adjust drilling methods as appropriate

Report equipment issues, safety concerns, or project challenges promptly

Maintain a clean, organized, and professional job site

High school diploma or equivalent required
-
Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record; CDL preferred or ability to obtain

Experience operating geotechnical drilling equipment (e.g., auger, rotary, sonic, or CPT rigs)

Working knowledge of drilling methods, sampling techniques, and subsurface conditions

Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and perform basic equipment repairs

Ability to coordinate tasks with a small crew in the field

Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and field instructions

Strong communication skills and attention to detail

Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment

Must be at least 18 years of age

Ability to safely operate and transport drill rigs and tow trailers/equipment

Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting 50 lbs. repeatedly and occasionally up to 150 lbs.

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and navigate uneven, rugged, or swampy terrain

Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and perform manual labor throughout the workday

Strong math and documentation skills for accurate logging of depths, samples, and conditions

Willingness to work extended hours, variable schedules, and travel frequently (including occasional weekends)

Reliable transportation to and from work

Strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship

Ability to pass a preemployment background check, physical exam, motor vehicle record check, and drug screening

Reliable and punctual attendance
This position requires working outdoors on active construction and drilling sites in a variety of weather conditions. Travel and overnight stays may be required depending on project locations.
