Construction Staff Accountant

SH Residential | Construction | Sitework (Brentwood, Tennessee)
Full-Time | In-Person
Salary Range: $75,000 – $95,000 Annually

Position Overview

SH Residential is seeking an experienced, highly organized Construction Staff Accountant to support the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of our Nashville-based residential and construction business.

This is a hands-on accounting role for someone who understands the unique financial requirements of the construction industry and is equally comfortable managing detailed transactional work and supporting broader project financial reporting.

The Construction Staff Accountant will be directly involved in accounts payable and receivable, invoice coding, check processing, payroll, bank reconciliations, job costing, project billing, vendor and subcontractor compliance, and financial reporting. This individual will work closely with project teams, vendors, subcontractors, and company leadership to ensure financial information is accurate, organized, and timely.

The ideal candidate has direct construction accounting experience, strong attention to detail, and a willingness to take ownership of the full accounting process—from entering invoices and processing payments to reviewing job costs and preparing financial reports.

This is a full-time, in-person position based in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Key Responsibilities:

Construction & Project Accounting

Set up new projects / jobs within the accounting system and maintain accurate project financial information.
Monitor job budgets, commitments, costs, and billing activity.
Maintain accurate job cost codes, including labor and equipment costs.
Prepare and support project and progress billing.
Review job cost reports and identify discrepancies requiring follow-up.
Prepare and maintain Purchase Orders (POs), subcontracts, and related financial documentation.
Monitor outstanding Letters of Credit (LOCs) and other project-related financial obligations.
Provide accurate and timely financial information to project and construction teams.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

Receive, input, code, and process vendor and subcontractor invoices accurately and timely.
Prepare and process check runs and other vendor payments.
Manage day-to-day accounts payable and accounts receivable activities.
Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and job cost codes.
Perform bank and account reconciliations and research discrepancies as needed.
Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
Support month-end and year-end accounting processes.

Vendor & Subcontractor Administration

Establish and maintain vendor and subcontractor records.
Collect and maintain W-9s, Certificates of Insurance (COIs), contracts, and other required compliance documentation.
Verify appropriate documentation and approvals prior to processing payments.
Communicate directly with vendors and subcontractors regarding invoices, payments, documentation, and account questions.
Maintain strong working relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and internal project teams.

Payroll & Employee Administration

Process employee payroll accurately and timely.
Maintain payroll and related accounting records.
Assist with new-hire onboarding and employee termination paperwork.
Maintain current employee and equipment records.
Coordinate with leadership, HR, and outside providers as necessary to ensure accurate employee documentation.

Financial Reporting & Administrative Support

Assist with monthly financial reporting, including P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow information.
Prepare recurring financial and job cost reports for management.
Assist with cash flow tracking and financial forecasting.
Maintain organized accounting, project, vendor, and compliance records.
Assist with tax, audit, insurance, and other financial documentation as requested.
Support leadership with accounting and administrative projects as needed.
Help identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, documentation, and internal controls.

Qualifications

3–5+ years of accounting experience within the construction, residential development, general contracting, or closely related industry required.
Demonstrated knowledge of construction accounting, including job costing, cost codes, project/progress billing, Purchase Orders, subcontracts, and vendor documentation.
Strong working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger accounting, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting.
Experience processing invoices, vendor payments/check runs, and payroll.
Experience working directly with project managers, vendors, and subcontractors.
Strong proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of both routine accounting functions and more complex financial assignments.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
Experience specifically within residential construction or real estate development.
Experience with construction accounting or project management platforms such as Procore, Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, or similar systems.
Experience supporting month-end close, financial reporting, cash flow management, and job cost analysis.

We are looking for someone who understands that strong construction accounting requires both big-picture financial awareness and attention to the day-to-day details.

The right candidate will be comfortable reviewing job costs and financial reports one moment and processing invoices or preparing checks the next. This is not an accounting role that simply oversees transactional functions—the Construction Staff Accountant will be an active, hands-on participant in them.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys being close to the operations of the business, takes pride in maintaining accurate and organized financial records, and understands how strong accounting practices support successful construction projects.
