After-School Dance & Movement Teacher (Part-Time)

The Advent School is seeking an enthusiastic, energetic, and creative After-School Dance & Movement Teacher to lead engaging dance and movement classes for students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6 during the 2026–2027 academic year.
This is an exciting opportunity for a dance educator who enjoys inspiring young children through movement, music, and creative expression. The successful candidate will create developmentally appropriate, hands-on dance and movement experiences that foster confidence, coordination, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for movement in a joyful after-school environment.
Position Details
- Position Type: Part-Time
- Compensation: $25–$30 per hour
- Location: The Advent School, Boston, MA
- Duration: September 2026 through June 2027
Preferred Availability:
- Monday–Thursday: 3:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.
- Friday: 12:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.
While candidates with broader availability are preferred, we welcome applications from instructors who can commit to teaching one or more days per week.
Responsibilities
Dance & Movement Instruction
- Lead engaging, developmentally appropriate dance and movement classes for students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet the developmental needs of students across multiple age groups.
- Foster creativity, confidence, coordination, musicality, physical fitness, and self-expression through movement.
- Introduce students to a variety of dance styles, movement practices, and cultural dance traditions.
- Encourage collaboration, creativity, and joyful participation in every class.
Creative Movement (Pre-K–Kindergarten)
- Guide young learners through imaginative movement, rhythm games, storytelling, and creative play.
- Incorporate age-appropriate props such as ribbons, scarves, beanbags, hoops, and parachutes to encourage exploration, body awareness, and coordination.
- Develop gross motor skills, balance, spatial awareness, rhythm, and confidence through playful movement experiences.
Dance Foundations (Grades 1–3)
- Teach foundational dance techniques and simple choreography.
- Introduce students to styles such as Jazz, Folk Dance, Creative Movement, and introductory Ballet concepts.
- Build students' understanding of rhythm, timing, coordination, musicality, and spatial awareness through engaging activities.
Dance Technique & Choreography (Grades 4–6)
- Lead more advanced movement experiences in styles such as Hip-Hop, Jazz, Modern/Contemporary, and multicultural dance traditions.
- Teach increasingly complex movement combinations, choreography, and performance techniques.
- Encourage artistic expression, teamwork, and performance confidence through collaborative dance experiences.
Curriculum & Lesson Planning
- Design creative, developmentally appropriate dance and movement lessons.
- Create engaging experiences that promote physical literacy, artistic expression, coordination, creativity, and teamwork.
- Incorporate music, games, movement exploration, and creative challenges into each class.
- Prepare students for informal demonstrations or end-of-session showcases for families when appropriate.
Classroom Management
- Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Establish clear expectations and manage student behavior using positive reinforcement.
- Foster respect, collaboration, confidence, and joyful participation among students.
- Maintain a safe, energetic, and engaging classroom environment.
Safety & Program Support
- Ensure student safety during movement instruction, transitions, and dismissal.
- Monitor proper movement techniques to promote safe participation.
- Maintain an organized classroom and care for dance equipment, props, and instructional materials.
- Collaborate with program staff to support the overall success of the After-School Enrichment Program.
Professionalism & Communication
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions and follow all school policies related to student safety and supervision.
Qualifications
- Commitment to teaching throughout the 2026–2027 academic year.
- Experience teaching dance, creative movement, or movement-based enrichment to children ages 4–12.
- Strong background in one or more dance or movement disciplines such as Jazz, Hip-Hop, Modern, Ballet, Creative Movement, Folk Dance, multicultural dance traditions, or children's movement education.
- Understanding of children's physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development.
- Ability to create engaging, inclusive experiences that emphasize movement, creativity, and confidence over technical perfection.
- Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and collaboration skills.
- Enthusiastic, dependable, creative, and student-centered.
- Passion for dance, movement education, and helping children discover the joy of creative expression.
