About Southern Folger Contracting, Inc.
We specialize in institutional detention equipment and materials for the jail, detention and prison industries at the federal, state, county, private and local levels. IronPlan is a sister company supporting Southern Folger Contracting's information technology needs.
About IronPlan
IronPlan is a purpose-built maintenance and inspection platform for correctional facilities. We help institutions manage thousands of pieces of security equipment — doors, locks, life-safety systems — across multi-building campuses, with floor-plan-driven workflows and condition-based scoring that feeds capital planning. Our customers include state Departments of Corrections and county jails operating critical infrastructure where reliability is non-negotiable. We're a small product team that ships a lot, and we're hiring our first dedicated hybrid role to help us onboard new customers faster, keep our data clean, and turn customer requests into shipped features.
About the role
This is a true hybrid role — roughly half business analyst, half junior developer. You'll sit between our customers, our data, and our application code. On Monday you might be on a call with a facilities director walking through a floor plan; on Tuesday writing a Python script to load 2,000 doors into the database; on Wednesday writing the SQL behind a new condition report; on Thursday drafting acceptance criteria for a feature; on Friday testing it. You'll be a force multiplier for a small engineering team. The bar is curiosity, careful work, and willingness to learn what you don't already know.
What you'll do
- Customer onboarding. Take in floor-plan PDFs, equipment spreadsheets, and customer interviews, and turn them into clean, queryable records in our database. Validate the result and walk the customer through it.
- Data work. Write SQL against our PostgreSQL database to answer customer and internal questions, generate reports, and audit data quality. Build small Python tooling (boto3, psycopg2, pandas) to automate loads and transformations.
- Requirements & specs. Join customer calls, write up what you heard, draft user stories and acceptance criteria, and feed them into the dev queue. Push back when something doesn't make sense.
- QA & test plans. Write test cases for new features, run them, and file bugs engineers can actually act on.
- Documentation. Keep internal docs current — schema notes, runbooks for recurring data operations, customer-facing setup guides.
- Cross-functional glue. Translate between customers, support, and engineering. Surface patterns. Help us see what's actually happening in the product.
What you'll bring
Required:
- 1–3 years in a role that combined analysis and hands-on technical work. Could be a BA who's written SQL and scripts, a support engineer who graduated into product, a recent CS or analytics grad with strong internship experience, or a self-taught builder with a portfolio.
- Working SQL — you can write a multi-table join with aggregation without reaching for help. PostgreSQL a plus.
- Python competence — you can read and modify a script, debug an error, and use pandas or psycopg2 to move data around.
- Strong written communication. You can summarize a customer call in three paragraphs that a developer can actually use.
- Comfort with ambiguity and not-yet-documented systems. You'd rather investigate than guess.
Nice to have:
- AWS (S3, RDS) familiarity
- Experience with floor plans, GIS, CAD, or any spatial-data domain
- Exposure to React or any modern frontend framework
- Background in facilities, construction, security systems, or government/correctional work
- Prior experience at a small company where roles weren't tightly scoped
- Hands-on experience with AI coding and workflow tools — Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Cursor, or similar — and a point of view on where they help vs. where they get in the way
