The Lead Drafter/Engineer will work closely with the Manufacturing Engineering team to design and develop custom Millwork and Cabinets for high end custom homes and commercial projects. The Engineer will be responsible for drafting and overseeing new shop drawings and CNC files for production. They will also be modifying existing shop drawings to meet customer requirements and changes. A Lead Drafter/Engineer at a cabinet shop combines technical drafting expertise with engineering principles and leadership skills to manage the creation of detailed, production-ready plans for custom cabinetry and architectural millwork
. This role ensures designs are structurally sound, compliant with all standards, and optimized for efficient manufacturing using CNC technology. Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Mentorship: Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of drafters, overseeing the quality and accuracy of their work and managing daily drafting operations.
- Design & Engineering: Translate complex architectural and designer drawings into detailed 2D and 3D shop drawings, ensuring designs are feasible and structurally sound.
- Production Documentation: Generate precise production documentation, including cut lists (BOM), material take-offs, and organized nested drawings for the CNC router.
- CNC Programming: Create and troubleshoot CNC programs and machine code using specialized software like Cabinet Vision, assigning proper materials and machining details.
- Collaboration and Coordination: Serve as the technical liaison between project managers, production staff, and installers, to resolve design issues and ensure seamless workflow from design to installation.
- Standards and Quality Control: Maintain and refine CV templates, libraries, and engineering workflows, ensuring all designs comply with industry standards, building codes (e.g., ADA, AWI), and company quality benchmarks.
- Process Improvement: Identify and implement improvements in drafting, engineering, and production processes to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve product quality.
- Problem-Solving: Proactively troubleshoot design and manufacturing concerns, working directly with shop floor personnel to find practical solutions as issues arise.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Experience: A minimum of 3+ years of drafting/engineering experience within the architectural millwork, custom cabinetry, or a similar fabrication industry, with demonstrated experience in a leadership or management role.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Expert proficiency cabinetry software (e.g., Cabinet Vision). Cabinet Vision preferred.
- Strong understanding of CNC programming principles and the ability to generate machine-ready files.
- Familiarity with 3D modeling and visualization techniques.
- Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of cabinet construction methods, woodworking materials, hardware, finishes, and installation techniques.
- Analytical Skills: Strong mathematical skills and the ability to perform complex calculations related to dimensions, volume, and material usage.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for clear interaction with a diverse range of stakeholders, from clients to shop floor staff.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, excellent time management, and leadership capabilities.
- Education: (Not required) An associate or bachelor's degree in drafting, engineering technology, or a related field is typically preferred, though extensive professional experience is highly valued.
