Full Job Description

SHR Talent is partnering with a healthcare client in the Las Vegas, Nevada area in its search for a Director of Surgical Services. This executive nursing leadership opportunity is responsible for the strategic, operational, financial, and clinical oversight of a high-volume Surgical Services division within one of the largest acute care hospitals in the region. The Director will lead multiple perioperative departments while ensuring exceptional patient-centered care, operational excellence, physician engagement, employee development, and continued growth across surgical service lines.

The Director of Surgical Services will oversee a complex perioperative environment that includes the Operating Room, Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR), Endoscopy, Sterile Processing, Anesthesia Technicians, and Operating Room Environmental Services. Working closely with executive leadership, physicians, nursing leaders, and interdisciplinary teams, this individual will drive quality improvement initiatives, optimize surgical throughput, enhance patient safety, and achieve financial and operational performance goals.

This opportunity offers the chance to lead one of the busiest surgical programs in the region, supporting adult and pediatric surgical services, cardiovascular surgery, trauma, burn, orthopedic, neurosurgical, and transplant-related programs. The ideal candidate is a proven perioperative leader with strong acute care Surgical Services experience, exceptional leadership skills, and a demonstrated history of improving operational metrics and patient outcomes.

Responsibilities:

Provide strategic and operational leadership for Surgical Services, including Operating Room, CVOR, Endoscopy, Sterile Processing, Anesthesia Technicians, and OR Environmental Services
Ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care through evidence-based practices, regulatory compliance, and continuous quality improvement initiatives
Collaborate with physicians, executive leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize surgical throughput, patient flow, operational efficiency, and patient outcomes
Develop and implement policies, procedures, and clinical standards that support patient safety, accreditation readiness, and regulatory compliance
Lead staffing, workforce planning, succession planning, employee engagement, recruitment, coaching, and professional development initiatives across Surgical Services
Monitor and improve key operational metrics including surgical volumes, first-case on-time starts, turnover times, block utilization, staffing productivity, patient satisfaction, and financial performance
Develop and manage departmental budgets, labor productivity, capital planning, supply utilization, and expense management to achieve organizational goals
Support strategic growth initiatives, physician partnerships, service line expansion, and implementation of advanced surgical technologies
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, transparency, innovation, and continuous improvement throughout the perioperative division
Partner with leadership to identify opportunities for operational excellence, quality improvements, and enhanced patient experiences across all surgical services

Qualifications:

Degree

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred

License(s) or Certification(s)

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license required
Additional perioperative, leadership, or nursing certifications preferred (CNOR, NE-BC, CNML, etc.)

Job Experience and/or Industry Experience

Minimum of 1 year of recent Director-level Surgical Services leadership experience within an acute care hospital required
Minimum of 3 years of progressive Surgical Services experience in an acute care environment required
Experience leading high-volume perioperative operations including Operating Room, CVOR, Endoscopy, Sterile Processing, and multidisciplinary surgical teams preferred
Experience supporting trauma, cardiovascular surgery, pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, and other complex surgical specialties preferred
Demonstrated success improving operational performance, patient outcomes, physician engagement, and financial performance through measurable results

Software Skills

Experience utilizing Electronic Medical Records (EMR/EHR), perioperative information systems, workforce management software, analytics platforms, and Microsoft Office Suite required

Other Skills

Strong executive leadership, physician relationship management, operational excellence, financial acumen, and strategic planning skills
Excellent communication, collaboration, organizational, and change management abilities
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret operational, financial, and quality metrics to drive performance improvements
Ability to lead large multidisciplinary teams while maintaining exceptional standards for patient safety, clinical excellence, and operational efficiency

Position Highlights:

Full-time leadership opportunity
Day shift schedule with no weekends
Reports directly to the Vice President of Surgical Services and Chief Operating Officer
Oversight of Operating Room, CVOR, Endoscopy, Sterile Processing, Anesthesia Technicians, and OR Environmental Services
Leadership responsibility for 3 managers and approximately 167 FTEs
23 Operating Rooms supporting more than 18,000 surgical cases annually (approximately 60–80 cases per day)
Opportunity to lead one of Nevada's premier perioperative programs featuring adult and pediatric surgery, congenital heart surgery, cardiovascular surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, trauma, burn, and urology services
High-volume regional referral center with approximately 30+ patient transfers daily from surrounding facilities
Approximately 45% of surgical volume originates through the Emergency Department

Candidate Profile Highlights:

Current or recent Director of Surgical Services within a large acute care hospital required
Proven experience leading high-volume perioperative operations with oversight of multiple surgical departments and large clinical teams
Strong background in operational improvement, quality initiatives, physician collaboration, and financial management within Surgical Services
Demonstrated accomplishments improving key perioperative metrics including surgical throughput, first-case on-time starts, turnover times, staffing efficiency, patient satisfaction, quality outcomes, and financial performance
Experience managing complex surgical service lines including trauma, cardiovascular surgery, pediatric surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, and other specialty programs strongly preferred
Stable career progression with measurable leadership accomplishments supported by operational metrics and quality outcomes is highly desired
