Each year, the Sierra Nevada Alliance places 32 AmeriCorps members with partner conservation organizations throughout the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. During their terms of service, members restore and monitor impaired Sierra watersheds, educate local residents and visitors on environmental issues, and recruit and manage volunteers for various programs. SNAP members gain skills and technical training, are mentored by outstanding environmental leaders, and provide a meaningful contribution to the communities of the Sierra Nevada.

Position Title: River Assessment and Restoration Assistant

Organizational Background: American Rivers is the leading organization working to protect and restore the nation’s rivers and streams. Rivers connect us to each other, nature, and future generations. Since 1973, American Rivers has fought to preserve these connections, helping protect and restore more than 150,000 miles of rivers through advocacy efforts, on-the-ground projects, and the annual release of America’s Most Endangered River®. Headquartered in Washington, DC, American Rivers has offices across the country and more than 355,000 supporters, members, and volunteers nationwide. American Rivers’ California Region staff has been at the forefront of major river restoration and protection efforts including the Bay Delta Conservation Plan, the San Joaquin River Restoration Program, restoration of headwater meadows in the Sierra Nevada, the historic Klamath River dam removals, and the integration of river ecology in the redesign of California’s flood management system. Through our Regional Office in Nevada City, we are addressing several technical, institutional, and communication needs faced by the river conservation community. American Rivers works closely with many government, conservation, and recreation groups in California to restore rivers, floodplains, and meadows that have been harmed by hydropower dams, poor water quality, fish passage barriers, historic land use, and other ills.

Organizational/Program Goals 2025-26: In 2026/27, th American Rivers’ California Region will continue to expand its program with the goal of building resilient communities and river ecosystems in the face of climate change. Our work in the Sierra Nevada focuses on watershed health, including meadow restoration, fuels management, and road decommissioning. Our work in the greater California Region includes de-operating reservoirs and dams to protect downstream communities and increase aquatic habitat, restoring floodplains in the Central Valley, restoring healthy forests to protect rivers and communities from catastrophic wildfire, and increasing public access to greenspace and rivers. The River Assessment and Restoration Assistant will primarily work with the Headwaters Conservation team in the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of a range of projects focusing on rivers and watersheds. We believe that restoration and protection of river ecosystems, and the natural benefits they deliver, SNAP 2025-26 Service Plan provide invaluable benefits to communities in the Sierra, downstream, and future generations. In addition, we work in partnership with a range of stakeholders and aim to create model projects that can be replicated broadly.

Member Service Plan Overview and Outcomes: The 2026/2027 River Assessment and Restoration Assistant will work closely with the Headwaters Conservation team in the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of a range of projects focusing on rivers and watersheds in the Sierra Nevada.
