About Us

St. Croix Sensory is an industry-leading sensory evaluation laboratory headquartered in the St. Croix River Valley of Minnesota. For over 40 years, we've helped clients across environmental monitoring, consumer products, and materials testing answer one of science's most nuanced questions: what does it smell like, and how much?

The Role

We’re looking for a Lab Associate to join our team and play a hands‑on role in the day‑to‑day operations of our sensory evaluation laboratory. You’ll prepare and analyze samples, support odor panel evaluations, maintain equipment, and help ensure every test we deliver meets our high standards for accuracy and quality.

This is a great fit for someone who thrives on process, takes pride in precision, and is motivated by meaningful work. In this role, you’ll contribute to insights that support products across a wide range of real‑world applications—from everyday consumer goods like pet, home, personal, and air care products to more technical materials used in buildings, coatings, and medical settings. Your work happens behind the scenes, but it plays a vital role in shaping the safety, performance, and quality of products people interact with every day.

What You'll Do

Prepare, organize, and analyze samples for sensory testing following established protocols
Set up and monitor odor evaluation panels in compliance with quality standards
Perform equipment calibration, preventative maintenance, and QA/QC documentation
Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and supply inventory
Log samples, record data, and support accurate report preparation
Communicate with team members, assessors, and clients to keep projects running smoothly
Pitch in across lab operations as needed — we're a small team and everyone contributes

What We're Looking For

Required:

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, food science, or a related field — or equivalent hands-on lab experience
Strong attention to detail and comfort following precise, well-defined procedures
Good organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records
Solid dexterity and physical capability: this role involves repetitive tasks, extended periods of standing, and hands-on sample work
A functional sense of smell — you'll be evaluated against a certified standard (n-butanol) as part of the role
Team-first attitude and clear communication skills
Flexibility for occasional early-morning or late-evening sessions based on client scheduling needs
Two years of lab experience in academic, research, or industry settings

Preferred:

Interest in or familiarity with sensory science, odor testing, or environmental analysis
Experience with data entry, scientific software, or basic statistical analysis

One Important Note

This role involves routine exposure to non-toxic malodorous samples — strong, unpleasant, and sometimes very pungent odors are a normal and expected part of the work. We want to be upfront about that so you can decide if it's the right fit before you apply.

We also maintain a strict fragrance-free policy: no perfumes, colognes, scented lotions, scented hair products, or dryer sheets. This is a condition of employment and essential to the scientific integrity of our testing.
