Legislative Aide

Location: Central New Jersey Type: Full Time

Salary: Commensurate with experience

About the Role

A New Jersey legislator is seeking a detail-driven Legislative Aide to serve as support to our policy operation. This is a tracking-, research-, and writing-heavy role for someone who can hold a dozen moving pieces of legislation in their head, turn dense policy into clear memos, and keep our constituents and our office on the same page. If you're energized by the inner workings of the legislative process and take pride in being the person who always knows where a bill stands, this role is for you.

What You'll Do:

Legislative Tracking & Analysis

Track our team’s legislative progress
Coordinate with the Policy Director to turn ideas into bills
Identify opportunities to build coalitions with other members of the Legislature
Maintain historic trackers to monitor legislative and budget patterns
Assist senior staff with policy recommendations

Policy Research & Writing

Conduct policy research and prepare report summaries
Research topics for potential legislation
Write policy memos for legislators ahead of meetings and events

Committee & Session Support

Prepare agendas and materials for Committee meetings and Voting Sessions
Attend and staff committee meetings and voting sessions, as well as other policy meetings as requested
Staff legislators at events as needed

Constituent Services

Respond to constituent inquiries regarding policy
Monitor the constituent contact sheet for accuracy and consistency

What We're Looking For

Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, public administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience
Strong research, writing, and summarization skills, with an ability to translate complex policy into plain language
Familiarity with the New Jersey legislative process and how a bill moves through both houses
Exceptional attention to detail, organizing, and comfort managing multiple trackers and deadlines at once
Professional, responsive communication with constituents and colleagues
Discretion, sound judgment, and the ability to handle sensitive information
Proficiency with standard office and document software, including Microsoft Office Suite
Reliable transportation and availability for evening and/or weekend events
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and a valid New Jersey driver’s license
