POSITION SUMMARY
The Wastewater Facility Technician is responsible for performing routine operations, inspections, maintenance, and repairs at wastewater treatment disposal facilities and related infrastructure. This position supports the reliable operation of wastewater treatment processes and equipment by conducting disposal facility inspections, performing preventative maintenance, identifying operational issues, and assisting with repairs and corrective actions. The Wastewater Facility Technician works closely with wastewater operators, maintenance personnel, and supervisors to maintain safe, efficient, and compliant facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform routine inspections of wastewater treatment disposal facilities, buildings, tanks, pumps, valves, chemical systems, and related equipment.
- Monitor facility conditions and identify equipment malfunctions, leaks, abnormal operating conditions, and maintenance needs.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on wastewater treatment equipment and facility systems.
- Assist with the installation, repair, adjustment, and replacement of pumps, motors, valves, piping, chemical feed equipment, and other mechanical components.
- Operate and monitor wastewater treatment equipment and processes as directed.
- Assist wastewater operators with troubleshooting operational issues and disposal system upsets.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of treatment disposal facilities, equipment, tanks, and work areas.
- Take and record meter readings, equipment readings, and other operational data as required.
- Assist with maintaining accurate maintenance records, disposal system inspection reports, work orders, and operational documentation.
- Respond to equipment alarms, system failures, and facility emergencies and assist with corrective actions.
- Use hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and other specialized equipment to perform assigned work.
- Assist with preventative maintenance programs and identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and facility operations.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment and report material needs to the appropriate supervisor.
- Follow established safety procedures and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Maintain compliance with applicable environmental regulations, operating procedures, and company policies.
- Communicate facility conditions, equipment issues, and maintenance needs to supervisors and appropriate personnel.
- Participate in emergency response activities, after-hours call-outs, and on-call assignments as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- A valid driver’s license with clean driving record in accordance with company and insurance standards
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in wastewater treatment, industrial maintenance, mechanical maintenance, utilities, or a related field preferred.
- Knowledge of basic mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and maintenance practices.
- Ability to operate and maintain pumps, motors, valves, piping systems, and other wastewater treatment equipment.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and basic testing equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, work instructions, and basic technical documentation.
- Effective clear communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to identify equipment problems and communicate maintenance needs effectively.
- Visual acuity required to inspect equipment, read gauges, meters, computer screens, and operational data.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A valid driver’s Class A Commercial Driver’s license with clean driving record in accordance with company and insurance standards
- Wastewater operator certification or license.
- Associate degree or technical training in wastewater treatment, environmental science, industrial maintenance, mechanical technology, or a related field.
- Experience with wastewater treatment processes and equipment.
- Experience with pumps, motors, electrical controls, chemical feed systems, and mechanical equipment.
- Experience with SCADA or computerized monitoring and control systems.
- Experience performing preventative maintenance in a water or wastewater utility environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Heavy- Exerting 50 to 100lbs of force occasionally and/or more than 50lbs. of force frequently and/or more than 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are more than those for Heavy work.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and work in confined or restricted areas.
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs and work at elevated heights.
- Ability to work around wastewater, chemicals, odors, wet conditions, and moving mechanical equipment.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection when required.
- Ability to perform physical tasks in varying weather and environmental conditions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed in wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, treatment facilities, outdoor areas, and other utility locations.
- Exposure to wastewater, chemicals, fumes, odors, noise, wet surfaces, moving mechanical parts, and electrical equipment.
- Work may require exposure to extreme temperatures and inclement weather.
- Position may require weekends, holidays, overtime, emergency callouts, and on-call assignments.
- Must be available to respond to operational emergencies outside of normal working hours as required.
