About the Role
Certified Veterinary Technicians and Senior Technicians are leaders within the medical team and champions of medical excellence. This role requires advanced technical skill, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to collaborate closely with veterinarians, assistants, and client care staff.
CVTs are expected to perform technician appointments independently, support doctors during complex cases, mentor less experienced staff, and help uphold the highest medical and ethical standards within the hospital.
Schedule & Hours
- Full-time: 35–40 hours per week
- Part-time: Up to 30 hours per week
- Flexibility is required to assist with PTO or sick coverage as needed
- Schedule preferences will be considered whenever possible; hospital and team needs take priority
Consultations & Technician Appointments
- Perform consultations alongside veterinarians
- Conduct independent technician visits and follow-up appointments
- Prepare for each consultation by reviewing vaccines, medications, diagnostics, and preventive care status
- Review medical history and preventive care recommendations with clients at every visit
- Create vaccine plans for puppies, kittens, adult dogs, and cats in accordance with AAHA and AAFP guidelines
- Ensure exam rooms are fully stocked and prepared
- Utilize low-stress, compassionate handling techniques
- Maintain accurate medical records, reminders, and invoicing in real time
- Communicate treatment plans, charges, and costs prior to performing services
Patient Care & Nursing
- Triage patients and quickly recognize medical emergencies
- Understand normal and abnormal vital signs and patient parameters
- Assist doctors and technicians with advanced treatments and procedures
- Provide nursing and husbandry care for hospitalized patients, including feeding, cleaning, walking, and comfort measures
- Prepare and run in-house diagnostics (CBC, Chemistry, Sedivue, SNAP tests) and reference lab samples
- Administer injections (SQ, IM, IV)
- Prepare medications (oral, injectable, transdermal)
- Draw blood from all veins competently
- Perform ultrasound-guided or palpation-based cystocentesis
- Perform urinary catheterization in male dogs
- Obtain blood pressures and perform EKGs
- Perform dental charting, scaling, polishing, and dental radiographs
- Report diagnostic test results under veterinarian supervision
- Provide client education including discharge instructions and dietary recommendations
Surgery & Anesthesia Support
- Assist with catheter placements, cystocentesis, bandaging, and advanced medical techniques
- Obtain and interpret baseline vitals under sedation and anesthesia
- Monitor HR, RR, blood pressure, ETCO2, SpO2, and recognize thresholds requiring intervention
- Assist with induction, intubation, monitoring, and documentation of general anesthesia under veterinarian guidance
- Double-check injectable pharmaceuticals and controlled substances
- Prepare the surgical suite and anesthesia equipment
- Assist throughout surgical and dental procedures, including patient setup and monitoring
- Perform sterile instrument preparation and maintain cleanliness in surgical and dental areas
- Restock surgical supplies as needed
- Maintain accurate controlled drug logs
Hospital Operations & Equipment Care
- Unpack shipments and restock medical areas daily
- Perform routine maintenance on in-house laboratory equipment, autoclaves, dental equipment, radiology equipment, laser, and ultrasound
- Monitor inventory and communicate low-stock items to the inventory manager
- Identify malfunctioning equipment and report issues promptly
- Ensure all medical areas remain clean, organized, and fully stocked
- Confirm all trash is removed and medical spaces are clean at the end of each shift
Team Collaboration & Leadership
- Support colleagues and assist in training new staff and developing less experienced technicians
- Foster a welcoming, supportive, and solution-oriented team environment
- Communicate efficiently with front-of-house staff and clients
- Share feedback, needs, and concerns with medical leadership in a timely and respectful manner
Professional Development & Compliance
- Maintain compliance with New Hampshire state laws and medical staff requirements by 2026
- Complete and maintain continuing education requirements in accordance with NH regulations
