POSITION SUMMARY:
Experienced Retina Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe – Float
$26–$34 per hour | $500 Hiring Bonus
We are seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Technician to work closely with a retina physician in a busy, patient-centered vitreoretinal practice. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled technician who enjoys clinical responsibility, variety, and being part of an efficient, physician-led team.
This is a full-time float position that primarily supports our New Haven, Hamden, and Madison offices. Occasional coverage in Trumbull and New Fairfield is also required. Applicants must have reliable transportation and be willing to work at all five locations when scheduled. Business mileage for required travel between assigned offices is reimbursed according to practice policy.
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., plus approximately 5–10 weekend on-call rotations annually.

Primary Responsibilities
- Obtain patient histories and perform ophthalmic screening
- Scribe directly for the retina physician using Nextech, formerly MDI IntelleSys
- Coordinate patient flow through a busy retina clinic
- Prepare patients and rooms for intravitreal injections, laser procedures, and cryopexy
- Perform ophthalmic imaging, including OCT, fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography
- Assist the physician with examinations and in-office procedures
- Communicate compassionately with elderly patients and patients experiencing vision loss
- Assist with occasional clerical responsibilities when clinical coverage is not needed
- Participate in approximately 5–10 weekend on-call rotations annually, compensated at time-and-a-half or double time, depending on the day and applicable practice policy.
Training on the Optos camera and Heidelberg OCT will be provided to experienced ophthalmic technicians who have limited familiarity with this equipment.
Qualifications
- Ophthalmic experience is required
- At least 2 years of relevant ophthalmic experience or an equivalent combination of education and training
- Retina experience is preferred but not required
- Experience with ophthalmic screening, imaging, scribing, or procedure preparation
- COA, COT, OSC, or another ophthalmic credential is preferred but not required
- Strong computer and EMR skills
- Excellent communication, organization, and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently, accept direction, and take initiative
- Reliable transportation and willingness to work at all listed locations
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Manual dexterity to operate ophthalmic equipment
- Ability to assist patients with mobility needs, including patients using wheelchairs
- Ability to enter information accurately into the EMR
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
