Job description

Syklea is a pioneering French biotechnology company developing breakthrough solutions for CO₂ capture and valorization. Our mission: transform carbon into sustainable, bio-based resources that have a positive environmental impact.

As part of our international expansion, we are opening a new facility in New Jersey, USA, and are looking for a Fermentation Engineer to join our growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end management and optimization of microbial fermentation processes, from laboratory to pilot scale. This role offers a unique opportunity to join a deeptech company at the crossroads of biotechnology and environmental innovation.

Key Responsibilities

Design, execute, and optimize fermentation processes at laboratory, pilot, and pre-industrial scales.
Develop and refine experimental protocols to improve productivity, robustness, and yield of target strains.
Conduct metabolic and analytical monitoring of cultures, including growth kinetics, biomass/product ratios, and process parameters.
Operate and maintain bioreactors and fermentation systems (setup, sterilization, inoculation, sampling, cleaning, troubleshooting).
Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and propose improvements for scale-up and process development.
Ensure full compliance with quality, safety, and hygiene standards.
Collaborate with process and engineering teams in both the U.S. and France to integrate biological results into technological developments.

Qualifications and Background

Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, or Bioprocess Engineering.
3–7 years of professional experience in microbial fermentation or bioprocess development (R&D or industrial setting).
Demonstrated ability to manage independent research or process operations from planning through execution.
Experience in scale-up/scale-down and data-driven process optimization preferred.
Previous experience in a deeptech startup or environmental biotech project is a plus.

Technical and Soft Skills

Strong command of fermentation techniques and process control.
Proficiency with data analysis tools (Excel, statistical software, or bioprocess monitoring platforms).
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to work autonomously, with sound judgment and scientific rigor.
Adaptability and initiative in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment.

Languages

Fluent English (required) – main working language.
French is a plus, as regular communication with our R&D team in France will be expected.
