The Packaging Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily packaging operations across multiple packaging formats, including powder and solid-dose products such as tablets and capsules. This position ensures safe, efficient, and compliant production by supervising personnel, coordinating line activities, maintaining product quality, and supporting equipment performance.

The Packaging Supervisor is expected to maintain a visible, hands-on presence on the production floor, actively supporting operations, troubleshooting issues, developing employees, and holding the team accountable for meeting safety, quality, productivity, and schedule expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Supervise and coordinate packaging employees across powder and tablet/capsule packaging lines.
Provide daily work direction, establish priorities, assign employees to packaging lines, and adjust staffing based on production requirements.
Maintain a hands-on presence on the production floor and operate or support packaging lines as needed to ensure production continuity.
Oversee the setup, operation, and performance of packaging equipment, including auger fillers, stick-pack machines, bottle fillers, counters, cappers, labelers, induction sealers, and case packers.
Troubleshoot equipment and process issues, including fill-weight variation, sealing problems, counting inaccuracies, labeling errors, coding issues, and material-handling concerns.
Oversee the proper handling of powder products, including dosing accuracy, dust control, sanitation, and cross-contamination prevention.
Ensure tablet and capsule packaging operations consistently achieve accurate counts, proper sealing, correct labeling, and compliant lot and expiration-date coding.
Ensure line clearances, equipment changeovers, and production startups are completed efficiently and in accordance with SOPs, batch records, and production schedules.
Monitor employee and line performance to ensure work is completed accurately, safely, and within established timelines.
Hold employees accountable for meeting productivity, quality, attendance, safety, and workplace conduct expectations, and address performance gaps promptly in coordination with management and Human Resources.
Maintain, analyze, and report packaging metrics, including line efficiency, throughput, downtime, scrap, labor utilization, schedule attainment, and other established KPIs.
Identify performance trends and implement corrective actions to improve packaging results.
Participate in daily operations meetings by providing updates on production performance, staffing, equipment concerns, quality issues, downtime, and recovery plans.
Develop, implement, and maintain a structured operator training program covering equipment operation, line setup, changeovers, GMP requirements, safety practices, powder handling, documentation, and quality checks.
Maintain operator training records and qualification matrices and ensure employees are properly trained and qualified before independently performing assigned duties.
Train, coach, and develop operators to improve equipment knowledge, technical capability, productivity, and readiness for increased responsibility.
Ensure compliance with GMPs, SOPs, safety requirements, quality standards, and established production procedures.
Review packaging documentation and batch records for accuracy, completeness, and timely submission.
Conduct and verify required in-process quality checks, including fill weights, count accuracy, seal integrity, label accuracy, and lot and expiration-date coding.
Coordinate with Quality, Maintenance, Production Planning, Warehouse, and other departments to resolve operational issues and maintain production flow.
Ensure packaging equipment and work areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and inspection-ready condition, with particular attention to dust control and cross-contamination prevention.
Support investigations, root-cause analysis, deviations, and corrective and preventive actions.
Participate in internal and external audits and maintain departmental readiness for customer and regulatory inspections.
Lead continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency, reduce waste and downtime, improve changeovers, and optimize packaging-line performance.
Escalate safety, quality, staffing, equipment, and production concerns to the appropriate department or member of management in a timely manner.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; vocational, technical, or related post-secondary training preferred.
Minimum of two years of experience in packaging operations, including at least one year in a supervisory or comparable people-management role.
Experience supervising employees in a food, dietary supplement, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, or other GMP-regulated manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
Working knowledge of powder and solid-dose packaging machinery and processes.
Demonstrated ability to lead employees, manage performance, provide coaching, and hold team members accountable.
Experience developing or administering operator training and qualification programs preferred.
Understanding of GMPs, SOPs, safety requirements, production documentation, and in-process quality controls.
Ability to monitor production metrics, analyze performance trends, and implement corrective actions.
Strong communication, leadership, organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work effectively with Quality, Maintenance, Planning, Warehouse, and other cross-functional partners.
Basic computer skills, including the ability to enter and review production information and use ERP or manufacturing systems.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand or walk for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability and willingness to work flexible shifts, weekends, or overtime based on operational needs.
