About the Job
As a Millwork Finisher at Bengston Millwork, you'll join a small, highly skilled team of craftspeople dedicated to producing exceptional custom furniture, architectural millwork, cabinetry, and specialty display fixtures. As a close-knit team of fewer than 10 employees, everyone wears multiple hats, collaborates across departments, and takes pride in delivering outstanding work from start to finish.
While the majority of your work will focus on furniture and architectural millwork finishing, you'll also have the opportunity to contribute to scenic fabrication, retail displays, experiential environments, and custom one-of-a-kind projects. No two days are exactly alike, making this an ideal role for someone who enjoys variety and takes pride in solving unique finishing challenges.
We're looking for an experienced finisher with a strong eye for detail, excellent craftsmanship, and a collaborative mindset. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable working independently, supporting teammates, and taking ownership of their work.
Responsibilities
- Prepare wood surfaces through sanding, filling, patching, and final surface preparation.
- Apply stains, dyes, toners, sealers, lacquers, conversion varnishes, polyurethanes, paints, and specialty coatings to custom furniture, cabinetry, architectural millwork, and display fixtures.
- Operate and maintain HVLP spray equipment and other finishing tools to produce consistent, high-quality finishes.
- Mix stains, paints, and custom colors to achieve precise color matching and finish specifications.
- Perform touch-ups, rub-outs, polishing, and final detailing to ensure premium-quality results.
- Finish a variety of materials including hardwoods, veneers, MDF, plywood, composites, plastics, metal, and specialty substrates.
- Assist with scenic and display finishing, including painted finishes, faux finishing, and custom decorative treatments for retail and experiential projects.
- Read shop drawings, finish schedules, and project specifications to ensure accuracy throughout production.
- Inspect completed work to maintain Bengston Millwork's high standards for craftsmanship and quality.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe finishing department.
- Collaborate closely with cabinetmakers, fabricators, project managers, and installers to meet project schedules and customer expectations.
- Travel to project sites when needed for installation support, touch-ups, or field finishing.
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional experience in furniture finishing, cabinet finishing, architectural millwork finishing, scenic finishing, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of wood species, stains, sealers, paints, and clear coat finishing systems.
- Proficiency with HVLP spray equipment, sanding equipment, and general finishing tools.
- Experience with color matching, toning, glazing, and decorative finishing techniques.
- Experience with faux finishing or scenic painting is a plus.
- Working knowledge of woodworking and fabrication processes.
- High attention to detail with the ability to consistently produce premium-quality finishes.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced shop where priorities can shift between furniture, millwork, and custom display projects.
- Strong communication skills and a willingness to contribute wherever needed as part of a small team.
- Willingness to work overtime when necessary to meet project deadlines.
- Ability to safely lift materials, stand for extended periods, and perform the physical requirements of a manufacturing environment.
