Overnight Dog Handler (Overnight Canine Care Associate) - Part-Time or Full-Time

Location: South Street Seaport, Manhattan

About Us

DogHouse Daycare is a new, modern dog daycare facility in the South Street Seaport neighborhood of lower Manhattan. We’re focused on safety, cleanliness, and happy dogs and customers. We are always looking for reliable, committed team members who take pride in maintaining a safe and enriching environment for the dogs in our care, as well as fellow team members. Now, as we grow our overnight boarding service, we’re looking for a new team member to care for our boarding guests through the night — someone who takes pride in keeping dogs safe, comfortable, and well cared for while the rest of the city sleeps.

The Role

Just like with all our roles, your primary goal is safety. As our overnight handler, you'll work largely on your own, responsible for the well-being of our boarding guests and for the facility itself from close to open. The pace is different from a day shift: less open play, more settling dogs for the night, monitoring, feeding, medicating, and handling whatever comes up — calmly and independently. This role rewards sound judgment, attentiveness, and a genuine love for dogs of all sizes and temperaments.

Key Responsibilities

Overnight supervision: Monitor boarding guests through the night, watch for signs of distress or illness, and keep dogs calm, settled, and safe. Step in early and quietly to prevent problems before they start.
Feeding & medication: Manage evening and morning feedings per each dog's plan, and accurately administer any medications as directed.
Settle & separate: Crate, gate, or otherwise separate dogs appropriately for the night, and handle last-call and first-thing potty breaks.
Sanitation, reset & opening prep: Promptly clean up dog waste, mop floors, sanitize water bowls, run deep-cleaning tasks, and reset the space so it's clean and ready for the day team at open.
Health checks: Note any limps, cuts, refusal to eat, or odd behavior and document it for management and the day team. Escalate anything concerning right away.
Facility security: You are responsible for lock-up, securing the facility, and the alarm overnight.
Emergency response: Recognize signs of a medical emergency or a dog in distress, follow our emergency protocols, and contact the on-call manager and/or emergency vet as needed — including handling incidents on your own and documenting them clearly.
Documentation: Log feeding, meds, health notes, photos, and overnight activity in MoeGo on an iPad or MacBook.

Physical Requirements

Please read carefully. To be successful in this role, you must be able to:

Stay alert and responsive overnight: You may rest during quiet stretches, but you must be a light enough sleeper to wake to barking, distress, or disturbances and respond quickly.
React quickly: You must have the reflexes to move fast to prevent a scuffle or comfort an agitated or anxious dog — with no second handler beside you.
Move for extended periods: Standing, walking, squatting, bending, kneeling, and reaching as needed throughout the shift.
Lift and carry: Ability to lift a dog weighing up to 40 lbs solo.
Tolerate noise and mess: Dog boarding can be loud (barking) and messy (shedding, drool, accidents). You must be comfortable getting dirty.
Weather exposure: If you do outdoor relief walks, you must be willing to walk dogs in rain, snow, cold, or heat.

Qualifications

Experience: Prior hands-on animal care is strongly preferred for this role — boarding/kennel, vet clinic, shelter, or similar overnight or solo-care experience. Because you'll be working alone, this is not an entry-level training role.
Independent judgment: You can make sound, calm decisions on your own and know when to escalate.
Reliability: Our team and our guests depend on you. Punctuality and consistent attendance are non-negotiable, and overnight coverage especially cannot be left uncovered.
Comfort working solo: You're at ease being the only person in the building overnight and responsible for it.
Patience: Ability to remain calm and neutral with anxious, over-excited, or boundary-testing dogs.
Tech savvy: Comfortable learning and using MoeGo on an iPad or MacBook to log feeding, health notes, photos, and more.

Schedule

Overnight shifts are scheduled based on boarding reservations, so hours are variable and may not be guaranteed week to week. This role works best as a supplement to daytime hours or for someone seeking flexible part-time overnight work.
A typical overnight window runs approximately 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM; specific hours will be confirmed based on bookings and finalized with you in advance.
Some shifts may include an on-call or short-notice element, which we'll always communicate clearly.
We operate 7 days a week, so weekend and holiday availability may be required on a rotating or elective basis.

Please note that hourly compensation within the listed range – which includes an overnight differential above our daytime rate – will be determined during the interview process based on each candidate’s qualifications and experience level. All hours on shift are paid.
