Position Summary
VITS International is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Machine Builder to join our manufacturing team. This position is intended for a highly skilled mechanical professional with extensive experience building custom industrial machinery from the ground up. The ideal candidate is capable of taking a complete set of engineering drawings and independently building an entire machine from raw components to final assembly with minimal supervision. This individual must possess exceptional mechanical aptitude, advanced troubleshooting abilities, and hands-on experience operating manual machine tools including mills and lathes. This is not an entry-level assembly position. We are seeking a seasoned machine builder who takes pride in craftsmanship, precision, and solving complex mechanical challenges.
Primary Responsibilities
- Independently build custom industrial machinery from engineering drawings, blueprints, and bills of material.
- Interpret detailed mechanical drawings and determine proper assembly methods with little or no supervision.
- Machine precision components using manual mill and lathe to meet engineering specifications.
- Fit, align, install, and adjust mechanical components including bearings, shafts, gearboxes, chains, sprockets, belts, couplings, and linear motion systems.
- Diagnose mechanical issues during assembly and testing, determining root causes and implementing effective solutions.
- Modify and fabricate components when necessary to improve fit, function, or performance.
- Inspect assemblies using precision measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, depth gauges, and other inspection equipment.
- Perform final machine setup, alignment, adjustment, and functional testing.
- Work closely with engineering to resolve assembly challenges and provide recommendations for design improvements.
- Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and material handling equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Ensure all work meets VITS quality standards and production schedules.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of experience building industrial equipment, custom machinery, automation equipment, or similar capital equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to independently build complete machines directly from blueprints with minimal supervision.
- Extensive experience diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical systems.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with exceptional problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency reading and interpreting:
- Mechanical blueprints
- Assembly drawings
- Bills of material
- Engineering specifications
- Significant hands-on experience operating:
- Manual vertical milling machines
- Manual lathes
- Experience machining precision parts from raw material.
- Strong understanding of:
- Precision mechanical assembly
- Bearing installation
- Shaft alignment
- Gear and chain drives
- Belt drives
- Linear motion systems
- Pneumatic components
- Experience using precision measuring instruments and maintaining close mechanical tolerances.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for equipment installation or customer support.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building custom converting, printing, packaging, or automation equipment.
- Hydraulic and pneumatic system assembly.
- Machine installation and field service experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and work for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, crawling, reaching, and working in confined spaces.
- Ability to work safely around moving machinery, cranes, forklifts, and industrial equipment.
- Ability to work in environments with heat, cold, noise, grease, fumes, and other manufacturing conditions.
- Must be able to safely perform all essential job functions while adhering to company safety policies and procedures.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for a true craftsman—someone who enjoys building complex machinery and takes pride in producing world-class equipment. The successful candidate will have the confidence and experience to receive a set of blueprints, organize the build process, machine parts when necessary, solve mechanical problems independently, and deliver a completed machine that meets the highest standards of quality and precision. If you're the type of builder who enjoys taking ownership of a machine from the first component to final startup, we'd like to hear from you.
