AI Agent Engineer – Voice AI / Conversational AI

Location: Manhattan, New York, NY
Work Type: Full-Time | On-Site 4–5 Days per Week
Compensation: $200,000–$300,000 per year + Equity

About the Opportunity

A fast-growing, YC-backed AI startup in New York City is hiring an experienced AI Agent Engineer to build, deploy, and scale production-grade Voice AI and Conversational AI agents.

You will work on intelligent AI systems that handle millions of real-world interactions, combining LLMs, agentic workflows, real-time voice infrastructure, backend systems, and AI evaluation.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys building production AI products, solving complex infrastructure challenges, and working in a fast-paced startup environment.

What You'll Do

Design, build, and scale production AI agents and Voice AI systems
Develop reliable agentic workflows powered by Large Language Models (LLMs)
Build and maintain backend services using Node.js
Design scalable cloud infrastructure using AWS
Work with SQL databases and production data systems
Build real-time voice applications using LiveKit or similar voice-agent platforms
Develop and optimize prompt engineering strategies for conversational AI agents
Create evaluation frameworks to measure AI agent quality, accuracy, reliability, and performance
Improve latency, scalability, monitoring, and reliability across AI and voice infrastructure
Integrate speech technologies including Speech-to-Text (STT), Text-to-Speech (TTS), and real-time audio pipelines
Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and business teams to launch AI features into production
Debug and resolve complex issues across AI models, backend infrastructure, and voice systems

Required Qualifications

3+ years of Backend Engineering or Infrastructure Engineering experience
2+ years of experience with Voice AI, Conversational AI, AI agents, or agentic workflows
Strong production experience with Node.js
Strong experience with AWS cloud infrastructure
Strong knowledge of SQL and relational databases
Experience with LiveKit or a similar real-time voice/communications platform
Hands-on experience with LLMs, Generative AI, and Prompt Engineering
Experience building or implementing AI evaluation and testing systems
Experience deploying and supporting software in a production environment
Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Comfortable working in a high-growth startup environment

Nice to Have

Experience with SIP, VoIP, telephony, or contact center infrastructure
Experience building real-time audio or speech processing systems
Knowledge of STT/TTS infrastructure and speech AI
Experience optimizing low-latency AI applications
Experience working with high-volume conversational or voice applications
Fintech, financial services, lending, payments, or debt collection technology experience
Previous experience at an early-stage or high-growth technology startup

The ideal candidate is an engineer who can work across both AI and backend infrastructure. You should be comfortable taking an AI agent from prototype to a scalable production system and solving the engineering challenges that come with large volumes of real-time conversations.

Base Salary: $200,000–$300,000 per year

Work Location

This is primarily an on-site position in Manhattan, New York City, requiring employees to work from the office approximately 4–5 days per week.
