Job Description

Position Title: Creative Art Therapist (Part-Time)

AGENCY SUMMARY

The Coalition for Hispanic Family Services is a non-profit community-based organization serving children and families of North Brooklyn and Queens. Services include foster care, adoption, youth development, family support, mental health, internships, community building and after school education.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Coalition’s Youth Development Programs aim to serve and support all youth and families within our community and beyond, offering youth, teen, and adult programming year-round. The Youth Development Programs empower participants to take part in programs and events that enhance their well-being, appeal to their interests, expand their creativity, and highlight strengths and potential. Through a family and community-oriented lens and model, the programs strive to recognize and address needs, create a safe space for participants, and develop individuals to be leaders in their own community.

POSITION SUMMARY

23 Hours/Week. Benefits eligible.

The Art Therapist will incorporate the arts and the therapeutic components of art therapy by providing case management services, assessment, referrals, crisis counseling, individual and family therapy, and support groups to any child or parent associated with the youth development programs. The Art Therapist will evaluate potential candidates for these services by becoming aware of at-risk situations, problems or behaviors identified by staff, when conducting observations, and through psychosocial intake. S/he is responsible for collaborating with program staff to provide a reflective/therapeutic component for all program initiatives and participate fully in all projects and activities. If licensed/board-certified, the Art Therapist will oversee interns and caseloads across the sites and maintain their own caseload as necessary. This is a year-round position including summer camp. The programs are school-based or support schools and a commitment to the full academic year is expected. Vacations must be planned when programs are closed, around the DOE Academic Calendar. Art Therapists may be assigned to multiple sites and sites may change given client need.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilitate the client onboarding process for art therapy referrals, including obtaining consent, conducting psychosocial assessments, developing treatment plans, documenting progress notes, completing discharge summaries, and maintaining all relevant clinical documentation.
Maintain accurate and updated clinical documentation and session attendance.
Plan and facilitate psychoeducational and targeted art therapy groups tailored to client needs.
Manage an individual client caseload and maintain ongoing communication with parents and caregivers, as appropriate.
Identify clients in need of case management services and notify the Supervisor, coordinating referrals and follow-ups as needed.
Come prepared to individual and group supervision sessions with relevant clinical content, including case updates and therapeutic processes.
Provide weekly case updates during supervision to ensure clinical alignment and support.
Utilize concurrent notetaking to document key clinical observations, concerns, and discussion points for supervision.
Maintain a schedule of 5 client contact hours per day for full-time staff and 3 contact hours per day for part-time staff.
Conduct 1–2 evening sessions per week for teens or parents, based on site needs and client interest.
Support and participate in planning therapeutic art activities for Family Art Nights and other community engagement events.
Monitor art supply inventory and submit timely order requests to ensure materials are available for programming.
Lead clinical assessment groups to evaluate group therapy needs and guide programming decisions.
Design and implement support groups for youth and parents, informed by assessment outcomes and therapeutic goals.
Provide crisis counseling on-site and off-site as needed, ensuring client safety and emotional support.
Collaborate with school personnel by attending meetings and leading case conferencing efforts to support client care.
Establish and maintain effective communication systems with program staff to identify and respond to at-risk behaviors or situations.
Attain additional training through professional development workshops.
Develop staff workshops and trainings to enrich behavior management tools of staff.
Design and implement behavior management plans and train families and staff to implement these plans.
Assist in facilitating bi-annual crisis protocol training for staff across sites.
Maintain on-going contact with all services available at the Coalition for Hispanic Family Services and the other community resources to provide appropriate referrals to families.
Maintain positive rapport with program staff, participants, community, partnerships, interns, and supervisor.
Provide therapeutic/self-reflective components for arts-based projects and events.
Possess an ability and willingness to work in different capacities and travel to different sites.
Complete any tasks deemed necessary by the Supervisor or Creative Art Therapy Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree in Creative Art Therapy; MUST be eligible for NYSED Limited Permit in Creative Art Therapy and ATCB ATR-P or LCAT/ATR/ATR-BC. Candidates must have a minimum of two years’ experience working with youth and an ability to obtain all required clearances and background checks. Must be able to participate in required trainings and mandated professional development workshops. Demonstrated knowledge of crisis management, therapeutic interventions, and trauma-informed practices required.

SALARY

$28-40/hour, commensurate with stage of training, experience, and credentials.
