Who We Are:

St. Nicks Alliance, a North Brooklyn based community organization, seeks to transform lives of low- and moderate- income people through employment, education, housing, elder care and social services. We do this by delivering impactful services with measurable outcomes to children, adults, and the elderly. As a civic anchor, we carry out this mission within the context of building a sustainable community for all people through the arts, environmental advocacy, and urban planning.

We are currently seeking an Full time After School Literacy Curriculum Writer and Coach for our after-school locations in Northern Brooklyn.

Children who are exposed to frequent and positive learning experiences at an early age are given the foundation to develop a love for reading. Education is fundamental to academic, personal, and long-term economic success, and the Curriculum Coach will help foster these outcomes.

What You’ll Do:

Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Education, you will collaborate with Program Directors and support Group Leaders and/or Literacy Leaders at each program to:

● Implement theme-based curriculum and lessons effectively.

● Engage children in reading and writing activities that are of high interest and accessible to diverse learners.

● Adapt materials for a variety of age groups and program settings.

● Improve facilitation and instructional skills.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

● In collaboration with the Associate Director of Education, the K-5 Curriculum Writer will engage in a highly creative, iterative, and collaborative development process and produce lessons that are rigorous, engaging, culturally relatable and meaningful to elementary school students;

● Write lessons and supporting material aligned to the interdisciplinary project-based, thematic unit, and for implementation in an afterschool environment.

● Write learning objectives, unit overviews, activities, and assessments that align to state standards;

● Design and deliver a system of professional learning (trainings) for the front line staff (group leaders/literacy leaders)

● Coaching and Mentoring

o Conduct coaching sessions with Group Leaders and Literacy Leaders, including:

▪ Demonstration lessons to model best practices.

▪ Co-teaching opportunities to build collaboration and skills.

▪ Parallel teaching to refine instructional delivery.

o Provide mentorship and guidance to help staff improve classroom skills, including:

▪ Facilitation of activities.

▪ Classroom management.

▪ Effective use of space to enhance learning.

▪ Assist Group Leaders and Literacy Leaders in writing STEM activities and Social-Emotional Learning

(SEL) activities to enhance student engagement and development.

● Professional Development

o Design and deliver monthly professional development sessions tailored to staff needs based on observations and feedback.

o Collaborate with the team to create professional development opportunities that enhance staff understanding of

effective instructional practices.

● Collaboration and Curriculum Support

o Work closely with site directors to ensure alignment between curriculum and program goals.

o Assist Group Leaders and Literacy Leaders in developing a language-rich environment that sparks excitement

around children’s curiosities and growing knowledge.

o Help Literacy Leaders make meaningful connections to the school day curriculum and adapt lesson plans to reflect the school community’s needs.

● Weekly Support Sessions

o Conduct weekly sessions with Literacy Leaders to:

▪ Differentiate lesson plans to meet the needs of diverse learners.

▪ Align lesson plans with the interests and needs of the school community.

▪ Provide targeted support to improve instructional quality.

● Enhancing Literacy Instruction

o Support Literacy Leaders in fostering a love for reading and writing by:

▪ Creating activities that resonate with youth and build their literacy skills.

▪ Mentoring Literacy Leaders on how to help youth grow as readers and writers.

▪ Building connections between literacy activities and the students’ daily lives.

What We Are Looking For:

● Teacher Certification and/or equivalent education, master’s preferred

● Experience planning project-based learning units for elementary school students

● Experience incorporating word study into elementary curriculum

● Ability to provide strength-based coaching to program staff who typically do not have education credentials

● Passion for academic enrichment in an afterschool setting.

● At least 3 years teaching experience

● Able to use own initiative, sound judgment, tact and diplomacy.

● Part-time, 3-4 hours/day, 2-4 days/week
