Freelance Medical Translator / Interpreter — Multiple Locations, NY/NJ/CT
Nuance Languages has over 20 years of experience in the translation and interpretation industry. We are seeking professional freelance medical interpreters to assist Limited English Proficiency patients during medical appointments at multiple client locations throughout the New York tri-state area.
While many people commonly refer to this work as “translation,” this position primarily involves spoken, in-person interpretation between patients and medical providers.
This is not a single-site position. Assignments may be available in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, northern New Jersey, Connecticut, and surrounding areas. Interpreters may accept assignments based on their availability, language pair, distance, and preferred coverage area.
The interpreter will accompany patients to doctor visits, facilitate communication between the patient and medical provider, and help ensure that all parties understand each other clearly and accurately. The interpreter may also assist patients with basic forms when appropriate.
Interpreters are responsible for their own transportation.
Responsibilities
- Provide accurate, complete, and impartial interpretation between English and the target language.
- Render the meaning, tone, and intent of each speaker without additions, omissions, or personal opinions.
- Follow established medical interpretation protocols and the NCIHC National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care.
- Maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor at all times.
- Manage the flow of communication without taking over the conversation.
- Follow client instructions and avoid direct interaction with the patient outside the scope of the assignment unless authorized.
- Use clear enunciation, professional language, and polite forms of expression.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and sound judgment when clarification or cultural brokering is appropriate.
- Communicate reliably by phone, email, text, or other work-related electronic communication.
Requirements
- Fluency in English and at least one other language.
- Proven interpretation experience, preferably in medical, healthcare, legal, or insurance-related settings.
- Understanding of healthcare terminology and interpreter ethics.
- Ability to travel reliably to assignments within your selected coverage area.
- Professional appearance, punctuality, and strong communication skills.
- Access to the internet and reliable electronic communication.
- Commitment to working respectfully with diverse communities.
Position Type
This is a freelance / independent contractor position. Interpreters may accept assignments based on availability, language pair, location, and travel distance.
Independent contractors are responsible for submitting invoices according to Nuance Languages’ billing procedures.
