Job Description

Clinical Dietitian

Summary of Position:

Clinical Dietitian is responsible for:

Assessing Resident’s nutritional needs.
Promoting the nutritional well-being Residents through the implementing of appropriate diets
Monitors Resident’s acceptance of meals
Participates in standing committees

Job Qualifications:

Completion of Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Diet Therapy.

Certification as a Registered Dietitian, or RD eligible. Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. At least one year’s experience as a clinical dietitian in long term care preferred.

Certification as a New York State dietitian. Knowledge of Gerimenu.

Personal Requirements:

Ability to comprehend and utilize nutritional practices, principles and theories.
Demonstrated verbal and writing abilities
Effective communication ability with individuals on all levels
Numerical ability required to compute nutrient needs for Residents, nutrient values of foods, tube feeding, etc.

Physical requirements:

Must pass pre-employment physical
Must maintain high standards of personal hygiene
Physical work functions are light

Duties and Responsibilities:

Meal Planning/Meal Services:

Make daily rounds at mealtime to monitor Residents intake, food preferences/intolerances, and acceptance of meals served.
Monitors functional status of each Residents as it affects eating.
Communicates Resident suggestions/problems concerning food to Food Service Director for implementation/resolution.
Conduct plate waste studies as needed
Conduct in-services as needed for dietary staff
Assists in evaluating menus for nutritional adequacies, as needed
Performs other related duties as required to maintain a high standard Dietary Department

Patient Services:

Nutritional Assessment-collects anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and social data necessary for proper patient assessment. Determines level of nutritional risk present, and appropriateness of diet orders for medical conditions. Identifies significant food-drug interactions. Makes recommendations regarding nutritional care.
Nutritional planning and implementation- develops the nutritional component of the Resident’s plan of care. Ensures that the plan of care meets individual patient needs and is realistic to implement. Uses the MDS 3.0, CAA’s and Triggers as guidelines in determining nutrition-related problems. Completes assessments in a timely manner.
Evaluation- evaluates the plan quarterly and as needed, making any necessary changes to ensure that optimal nutritional status is maintained for each Resident.
Patient Education- provided verbal/written diet instruction on admission and as needed, according to the Resident’s level of understanding. Counsels families when indicated.

Standing Committees:

Participates, as a member of the Care Plan team, as needed, in the quarterly interdisciplinary assessments of all Residents.
Represents the Dietary Department as Resident Council and Food Committee meetings
Participates in Ethics Committee meetings as necessary.

Other:

Helps to promote good nutritional practices by facility staff, by recommending suitable references on basic nutrition, therapeutics diets, food preparation and safety, healthy food choices, etc.
Interprets current research in nutrition science for facility staff as needed
Reports to work and leave in a timely manner
Assumes responsibility of Chief Clinical Dietitian as needed.

Pay: $38.00 - $45.00 per hour
