Full Job Description

SUMMARY

As the Meat Manager at Happier Grocery, you will oversee the company-wide meat program, including strategy, purchasing, vendor relationships, and in-store execution across all locations.

You are responsible for ensuring the highest standards of product quality, consistency, profitability, and food safety, while driving sales growth and optimizing margin performance. This role combines strategic sourcing and financial ownership with hands-on leadership and operational support across stores.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership & Program Ownership

Develop and execute the overall meat category strategy across all store locations
Define product assortment, pricing strategy, and merchandising standards
Ensure consistency in presentation, quality, and customer experience across stores
Partner with leadership on category growth initiatives and innovation

Purchasing & Vendor Management

Manage company-wide meat purchasing and procurement strategy
Source and negotiate with vendors to secure best quality, pricing, and supply reliability
Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers and distributors
Monitor market trends, costs, and availability to inform purchasing decisions
Ensure ethical sourcing and alignment with company standards

Financial & Inventory Management

Own category-level sales, margin, shrink, and profitability targets
Forecast demand and manage inventory levels across all locations
Implement controls to reduce waste, spoilage, and loss
Analyze performance data and adjust strategy to maximize results

Store Operations & Execution

Oversee and support in-store meat departments across all locations
Establish and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for cutting, merchandising, and storage
Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and regulatory requirements
Conduct store visits to audit quality, execution, and team performance

Team Leadership & Development

Train, mentor, and develop butchers and meat department staff
Provide coaching on cutting techniques, product knowledge, and sales
Build a strong bench of talent and support hiring as needed
Foster a culture of accountability, quality, and continuous improvement

Customer Experience & Sales Growth

Elevate the customer experience through high-quality offerings and knowledgeable service
Partner with marketing on promotions, seasonal programs, and product launches
Identify opportunities to increase basket size and customer engagement

Food Safety & Compliance

Ensure all stores adhere to food safety, sanitation, and regulatory standards.
Maintain consistency in handling, storage temperatures, and allergen protocols.
Implement best practices across all locations to ensure product integrity.

QUALIFICATIONS

5+ years of experience in meat operations, butchery, or meat category management
Strong expertise in meat sourcing, cuts, pricing, and merchandising
Proven experience in purchasing, vendor negotiation, and cost management
Demonstrated ability to manage multi-unit operations or programs
Strong financial acumen with ability to manage margin, shrink, and forecasting
Deep knowledge of food safety and regulatory requirements
Excellent leadership, coaching, and team development skills
Strong analytical and decision-making abilities
Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
Willingness to travel regularly between store locations

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
