Senior Entry Writer, Classification

Work Location: In Person

Job Type: Full-time

Job Summary

The Senior Entry Writer, Classification is responsible for validating the classification of goods imported into the United States and ensuring compliance with U.S. Customs regulations. This role reviews import documentation for accuracy and completeness, communicates directly with customers regarding classification requirements, and provides tariff classifications when needed based on product information, experience, and regulatory knowledge.

This position handles higher-volume and more complex classification activities, including verifying EDI feeds, utilizing internal classification databases, and recommending classifications to importers. The Senior Entry Writer, Classification also serves as a subject matter expert, and supports classification and compliance- related projects. A licensed customs broker is preferred for this role.

What You’ll Do

Validate and verify HTS classifications for imported goods entering the United States
Review import documentation to ensure compliance and completeness
Communicate with customers regarding missing information, classification questions, and trade compliance guidance
Research and assign HTS classifications when classifications are not provided
Handle higher-volume and more complex “copy/paste” classifications
Verify EDI feed classifications and pull classifications from internal databases
Recommend tariff classifications to importers based on product descriptions and supporting documentation
Assist with classification projects, process improvements, and compliance initiatives
Navigate and create import licenses for steel and aluminum products
Access CBP CROSS and assist with CBP binding ruling applications
Create FDA product codes and MID numbers
Extract and interpret information from commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, and certificates of origin
Support classification efforts involving EU and Canadian HTS requirements
Apply knowledge of Incoterms and international trade regulations

Experience & Skills You’ll Bring

Full knowledge of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS)
Ability to identify the correct HTS classification based on product descriptions
Understanding of free trade agreements and applicable trade laws
Knowledge of Chapter 98 HTS provisions
Strong understanding of Section 301 and Section 232 tariffs and their scope
Ability to read and interpret: IFI documentation (footwear), Fabric detail sheets (e.g., CG52), Apparel detail sheets
Knowledge of FDA product code creation
Knowledge of MID creation
Familiarity with CBP CROSS and binding ruling processes
Experience working with import licenses for steel and aluminum
Knowledge of EU and Canadian HTS classification processes preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Experience in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, or trade compliance preferred
GED/ High School Diploma Required
Licensed Customs Broker preferred
