Position Summary
The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, compliance with accounting standards, and timely financial reporting. This position will maintain accounting software to track the assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities. Additionally, this role is responsible for the preparation and processing of the bi-weekly payroll, ensuring strict compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The Accounting Manager will also oversee the accounting staff in the administration of all duties associated with the processing of accounts payable and receivable, as well as other general accounting activities. The Accounting Manager works closely with the VP of HR and other department leaders to support the organization's mission through sound financial management.
Major Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Perform general cost accounting responsibilities to support all financial activities for the Food Bank; partner with VP of Finance to ensure that all financial programs and initiatives are conducted with integrity and meet all expected guidelines (Accounting Policies, GAAP, FASB, Board requirements, legislative and statutory compliance, etc.)
- Supervise accounting team, including assigning work, providing training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
- Assist in maintaining the General Ledger and supervise the accounting staff work to ensure that all A/R and A/P activities are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Oversee the accurate coding of invoices, reconcile general ledger accounts and close the monthly books in accordance with generally accepted accounting, timelines and procedures.
- Verify deposits and address inquiries and resolve any discrepancies.
- Oversee and manage accounts receivable activities, including collections, and reconciling accounts upon payment.
- Oversee processing of invoices and assures that all charges are attributed to the appropriate accounts and programs.
- Process all cash from all sources inclusive of contributions and proceeds from internal initiatives (i.e. Café and Farm stand, catering, etc.)
- Provide outside auditors with assistance by gathering necessary account information and documents necessary to perform annual audit.
- Research and recommend system enhancements as needed and partners with VP of Finance in the overall management of all systems, particularly the interface of finance, inventory and donor databases.
- Works closely with the VP of Finance to ensure compliance with the local, state and federal government contract requirements. Maintain thorough knowledge of all statutory requirements and actively seeks to streamline reporting capabilities.
- Manage the organization's payroll process, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
- Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
- Coordinate payroll tax filings, W-2 preparation, and related reporting.
- Prepare monthly and annual journal entries as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or a related degree is preferred
- 3-5 years of overall professional finance experience required.
- Two years’ supervisory experience preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as it pertains to a nonprofit organization, with understanding of state, local and federal contract requirements is preferred.
- Experience managing payroll and payroll compliance (ADP Workforce Now preferred).
- Strong technical acumen with the ability to adapt to new software and updates based on the needs of the organization.
- Excellent organizational, written and verbal skills.
- The ability to hire, train, coach and develop direct reports is required.
Competencies
- Interface with all staff and the leadership team reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance.
- Effectively supervises accounting staff by providing direction and coaching while promoting accountability and teamwork.
- Works with local, state and government agencies, audit partners, banking and financial service providers as well as community partners as needed.
- Produces accurate financial records, reconciliations, payroll, and reports while minimizing errors and ensuring data integrity.
- Maintains high standard of integrity, confidentiality, and ethical conduct in the management of financial and payroll information.
Physical Requirements
- Working at a computer workstation, generally with a monitor, will be required.
- Occasional exposure to warehouse and commercial kitchen environments.
- Protective equipment must be worn when and where required.
- May require sitting, bending, lifting (up to 20 pounds), squatting and other minimal physical activity

Pay: $63,000.00 - $78,000.00 per year
