Special Education Coordinator

Qualifications:

1. Standard Teacher Certificate issued by NJDOE

2. Experience teaching students with disabilities

3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Job Description:

To provide sound educational programs for children who require at least a partially different program from regular classroom programs.
Analyze student data to identify students who need academic interventions and/or specialized services, use data to build compelling arguments that details the need for additional Special Education support, and present strong cases advocating for Special Education support to external stakeholders.
Manage the Special Education referral process from start to finish while ensuring families and relevant stakeholders are kept informed of all evaluations
Collect and edit reports that are part of a scholar’s special education record
Ensure all students with Special Education services are in compliance with their mandated services and accommodations, collaborate with school leadership and teaching staff to create strong systems that track student progress, and move swiftly to update as necessary to support scholar growth
Provide guidance and assistance for special ed. staff
Student observations
Identify, coordinate, develop and implement PD with and for staff
Attend eligibility meetings and IEP meetings as a co-facilitator
Work with families and students with IEP’s
Support special education teachers with attention to baseline, summative, and formative assessments.
Work with school administration to offer instructional strategies for teachers, knowing reading methods for specific deficit areas.
Contributes to the development of the total school philosophy of education.
Assists in the adaptation of school policies to include special education needs.
Recommends policies and programs essential to the needs of exceptional children.
Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing special education.
Provides leadership in establishing new programs and developing improved understanding of existing programs.
Coordinates all special education classroom programs.
Evaluates existing programs as an ongoing responsibility and recommends changes and additions as needed.
Establishes procedures for placement, evaluation, assignment, and reappraisal of students with regard to the special education services program.
Develops procedures for referral, securing medical reports, psychological examination, and placement.
Coordinates home instruction for homebound or hospitalized students.
Assists in recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of special education personnel.
Assumes responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents legally required or administratively useful.
Develops and maintains complete and cumulative individual records of all children receiving special services or enrolled in special classes for educational purposes. Said records not to replace IEP records.
Make recommendations for SPED related materials and resources
Interprets the objectives and programs of the special education services to the Board, the administration, the staff, and the public at large.
Evaluates on an ongoing basis, the total special education program, curriculum, procedures, and individual students' needs and achievements.
Consults with parents of students enrolled in the program.
Keeps current with the literature, new research findings, and improved techniques; and for attending appropriate professional meetings and conventions.
Participates in the planning and implementation of special education staff development.

Reports To: School Principal

EVALUATION: Done annually by School Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Eleven-month year.

Salary: $64,088 - $77,778
