Full Job Description

The Position:

ANHD is hiring for a Senior Campaign Organizer to lead our campaigns to preserve and expand New York City’s affordable housing supply. This position will involve developing and leading impactful campaigns to win legislative and policy changes that ensure the long term sustainability and affordability of NYC’s housing, secure public resources for affordable housing investment, and drive systemic change to address the root causes of our city’s longstanding housing affordability crisis. The ideal candidate will have significant experience leading both grassroots organizing and grasstops advocacy campaigns, a strong grasp of campaign strategies and tactics, familiarity with the community development movement, and a commitment to racial equity and community-driven solutions.

About ANHD:

The Association for Neighborhood & Housing Development (ANHD) is one of NYC’s leading policy advocacy organizations on housing and economic development. We are a coalition of 80+ neighborhood-based affordable housing and community development groups working to build community power to win affordable housing and thriving, equitable neighborhoods for all New Yorkers.

Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will join ANHD’s Organizing and Advocacy team, and will work closely with members of the Policy and Communications teams. This position reports to the Director of Advocacy and Policy.

Campaigns and Coalitions:

Lead a complex, multi-faceted, and high priority campaign to preserve affordable, subsidized housing and ensure the long-term sustainability of the non-profit affordable housing development sector.
Develop and coordinate coalition, working group, or committee structures to engage ANHD member organizations and allies in your campaigns and ensure that we remain accountable to and accurately reflect our members’ needs and priorities.
With housing policy staff and ANHD members, develop and refine clear short and long term campaign demands across both city and state levels.
In collaboration with ANHD members, develop campaign strategies and tactics to win short and long term demands.
With ANHD’s Director of Advocacy & Policy and our lobbying firm, develop and implement lobbying strategies to win political support for your campaigns.
Work closely with communications staff and consultants to create and implement social media and press strategies in support of our housing preservation campaigns.
Act as a public spokesperson for ANHD on your campaigns and related issues, including at press conferences, rallies, hearings, panels, and press interviews.

Organizational and Team contributions:

Stay informed on emerging issues in housing justice and community development and provide thought leadership on key issues.
Represent ANHD in coalitions and working groups, with partner organizations, and with elected officials and government agency staff, as appropriate and related to areas of expertise.
Participate in various team and all staff meetings, and facilitate on a rotating basis.
Support organization-wide events including ANHD’s Fight Forward conference series.
With leadership from the fundraising team, contribute to funder proposals and reports, participate in occasional funder meetings, and track deliverables related to your work.
Attend a wide range of external events and meetings to build and maintain strong relationships with ANHD member organizations, allies, and the broader housing and community development field.

Requirements:

We encourage candidates to apply even if they meet some and not all of the below requirements, given they are willing and motivated to grow into others with the appropriate support.

5-7 years of organizing and/or advocacy experience in housing, community organizing, labor, or related fields. Some experience with coalition coordination or grass-tops advocacy models is required.
Experience leading issue-based policy, legislative, and/or corporate campaigns. Ability to develop and execute strategies to advance complex, multi-year campaigns with multiple targets.
Excellent strategic thinking skills, including the ability to develop and advance long term campaign goals and maintain momentum towards strategic priorities while staying responsive to new developments and crises.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
A proven ability to independently manage and drive your work while maintaining effective collaboration with a team.
Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, including tenant leaders, community organizers, housing developers, policy experts, elected officials, agency staff, etc.
Strong project management skills, and an ability to work collaboratively and balance multiple projects effectively.
Commitment to New York City’s neighborhoods, non-for-profit community development corporations, community organizing, and grassroots organizations.

Preferred but not required:

Familiarity with NYC’s affordable housing and/or community development landscape.
Familiarity with the New York City and/or New York State budget and legislative processes.
Experience interacting with funders, and/or shaping policy initiatives for grant proposals.
Ability to monitor and track project budgets and deliverables.
Experience developing and executing communications and narrative-building strategies for issue campaigns

Salary and Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $89,000, depending on experience.
