Job Summary

The Newark Community Health Centers, Inc. (NJCRI) is seeking a dedicated LGBTQ Substance Use Disorder Counselor to join our LGBTQ programming division, PROJECT WOW. This role focuses on providing substance use prevention, assessment, and counseling services to LGBTQ individuals in the Newark and Northern New Jersey region, with a special emphasis on young adults and marginalized communities disproportionately impacted by HIV and addiction.

NJCRI is a leading nonprofit health and social service organization committed to serving underserved populations. Our programs span primary care, behavioral health, infectious disease treatment, LGBTQ+ services, housing, food access, prevention education, and community outreach. We are proud to be a safe, inclusive, and affirming environment for staff and clients alike.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial and needs assessments for clients reporting a history of substance misuse
Develop individualized treatment plans and appropriate care strategies based on assessment results
Provide referrals to higher levels of care (e.g., detox or inpatient programs) for clients with moderate to severe SUD
Offer ongoing individual and group counseling for clients with mild substance use disorder
Provide CLEAR (Choosing Life Empowering Action Results) counseling for pre-contemplative clients
Deliver services aligned with grant contracts for clients with substance use diagnoses
Build and maintain a referral network of SUD and recovery providers
Maintain confidential client files and ensure all documentation meets funding and agency standards
Enter daily service records into client charts and databases
Submit timely and accurate monthly reports to the Project Manager
Conduct quality assurance activities, including client satisfaction surveys and internal outcome evaluations
Participate in program evaluations and improvement efforts with leadership
Attend individual and group clinical supervision sessions
Collaborate with internal teams and external service providers to coordinate care
Represent the agency in weekly staff meetings and contribute to a collaborative team environment
Attend in-service training and pursue ongoing continuing education related to substance use treatment

Qualifications

Must hold one of the following:
Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC)
Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC)
Counselor-in-training with a plan to obtain CADC within 2 years of hire
2–5 years of experience working in substance use or chemical dependency counseling
Strong clinical and documentation skills, with ability to produce timely and accurate reports
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
Experience working with LGBTQ+ individuals, especially young adults from diverse, marginalized backgrounds
Knowledge of the cultural context and risk factors affecting men who have sex with men (MSM) of color
Strong oral presentation, writing, multitasking, and collaboration skills
