Full Job Description

Summary: The Youth Coordinator reports to the Public Health Specialist and plays a key role in promoting youth engagement, mental health, and substance use prevention through school and community partnerships. This position supports youth-led initiatives and implements strategies to build a healthier, more connected Melrose community.

Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of responsibilities that may be required. Supports the development and organization of youth focused prevention activities and programs related to substance use and mental health.
Promotes wellness policy change and programs that lead to a healthier Melrose.
Plans prevention education and training in accordance with established practice and evidence-based prevention theory.
Manages Youth Action Team (YAT), overseeing club advisors.
Meets weekly with Youth Action Team Leaders, creates agendas & facilitates meetings.
Oversees Youth Action Team leader projects (community or school-based), works with students to set shared goals for each project, and communicates regularly with leaders to ensure those goals are met.
Works closely with Melrose School Department Administration, Health & Wellness educators, Guidance & Student Support, and Athletic Programs to implement best-practices for health, wellness, substance use prevention, violence prevention, and mental health support.
Consults and participates in various community coalitions, groups, & advisory councils to assist in the implementation of the various health & wellness primary prevention and early intervention strategies.
Attend and participate in local and regional meetings and trainings.
Utilizes social media, print media, and other communication strategies to promote public health topics to provide information, change attitudes, and connect residents to resources.
Creates financial, statistical and narrative reports as required.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Two or more years of experience in Education, Public Health, or Social Services preferred.
Master’s in Education, Public Health, or a related field strongly preferred.
Flexible schedule required, including availability to work one morning or evening per week to accommodate students outside of school hours.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information to students, educators, families, and community partners.
Demonstrated experience in youth engagement or youth leadership development, particularly in school or community-based settings.
Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating programs or events, preferably in a health, education, or prevention setting.
Knowledge of behavioral health topics, including substance use prevention, mental health, and wellness promotion among youth.
Proficient in using technology and social media platforms for outreach, communication, and program promotion.
Cultural competency and experience working with diverse populations, including youth and families from a variety of backgrounds.
Must be able to pass a CORI, SORI, and driving record check.
A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.

Ability to lift and carry materials or supplies (such as promotional items, event materials, or presentation equipment) weighing up to 25 pounds.
Ability to remain in a stationary position (e.g., sitting or standing) for extended periods during meetings, presentations, and administrative tasks.
Ability to set up and break down tables, chairs, and light equipment for youth events or outreach activities.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in person and via phone or video conferencing.
Ability to use standard office equipment, including computers, printers, and audiovisual tools.
Mobility to attend indoor and outdoor events, including walking short distances and navigating varied terrain such as schoolyards, parks, and sidewalks.
