Full Job Description

The Opportunity

Are you a visionary cultural leader who loves building things from the ground up? The Center for Kashmir is establishing a landmark museum destination in Western New York, and we are seeking a dynamic, strategic Interim Museum Director to architect our foundational blueprint. With our grand opening slated for Spring 2027, this is a rare opportunity to get on board a highly anticipated project literally from the basement onwards and shape its ultimate trajectory. This initial 4-to-6-month hourly engagement is focused on turning vision into operational reality. You will work hand-in-hand with our Board of Directors and Trustees to build a comprehensive, end-to-end launch strategy. For the right candidate, this interim role has strong potential to evolve into the museum’s permanent, full-time Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

As the Interim Director, you won't just be managing—you will be pioneering. Your focus will be split between high-level strategic planning and building community roots.

1. Launch Strategy & Operational Blueprint

End-to-End Master Checklist: Collaborate with the Board of Directors and Trustees to design a foolproof pre-opening checklist ensuring no detail is overlooked.
Strategic Planning: Author comprehensive operational and go-to-market (GTM) strategies spanning:
Operations & Finance: Budget forecasting, vendor workflows, and daily operational policies. Marketing & PR: Building brand awareness and buzz ahead of the Spring 2027 launch.
Events & Fundraising: Structuring donor campaigns, foundational grants, and a premier soft-opening event series.
Recruitment Strategy: Outline future staffing needs and organizational structures to support a sustainable full-time launch.

2. Strategic Partnership & Ecosystem Building

Community Integration: Act as the face of the museum to cultivate deep roots within the Western New York ecosystem.
B2B & Tourism Alliances: Forge high-value partnerships with local hospitality businesses, regional tourism boards, and vendors to ensure the museum is a primary destination on the regional map.
Educational Outreach: Connect with local schools, universities, and historical/cultural organizations to develop future pipeline programs, field trips, and collaborative events that drive sustained footfall and revenue.

Qualifications & Experience

Executive Leadership: 10+ years of experience in a position of leadership, ideally within a history or cultural museum.
Budgetary Scale: Proven experience working with institutions featuring an annual multi million dollar budget.
The "Builder" Mindset: A track record of successfully launching or expanding programs, venues, or organizational strategies.
Work Authorization & Availability: Must have legal authorization to work in the United States and be contractually available to begin preparation on July 1, 2026, for a July 15, 2026 start date.

Compensation & Timeline

Rate: Competitive hourly contract rate, commensurate with experience (Note: As a contract assignment, this role does not offer benefits).
Duration: 4–6 months for the initial strategy and blueprint phase.
Future Outlook: Successful execution of the launch strategy positions the candidate as a premier choice for the permanent, Full-Time role.
