Civil Process Server
Job Summary
Berrien County Process Servers (BCPS) is seeking a dependable and professional Civil Process Server to join our growing team. This position is responsible for serving legal documents, conducting field investigations, completing affidavits of service, and maintaining accurate records. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working independently throughout Berrien County and surrounding areas.
This position requires professionalism, attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to interact respectfully with individuals in a variety of situations. Prior experience in law enforcement, military service, process serving, security, investigations, or legal services is preferred but not required.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve legal documents including summonses, complaints, subpoenas, garnishments, orders to show cause, personal protection orders, and eviction-related documents.
- Complete affidavits, proofs of service, and detailed service notes.
- Maintain accurate records of service attempts, contacts, and outcomes.
- Utilize GPS, maps, and skip-tracing resources to locate individuals.
- Plan and manage daily routes efficiently to maximize productivity.
- Verify identities and obtain signatures when required.
- Communicate regularly with office staff regarding assignment status.
- Perform field visits, stakeouts, and special assignments as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality of client and court information.
- Represent BCPS professionally while interacting with attorneys, courts, businesses, law enforcement agencies, and members of the public.
Qualifications
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficient with smartphones, email, and basic computer applications.
- Ability to walk, climb stairs, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Prior experience in process serving, law enforcement, military service, investigations, security, or legal support is preferred.
Compensation
- Independent Contractor Position.
- Competitive pay per completed service.
