What You'll Do
As an Automation Engineer, you'll play a key role in the design, implementation, troubleshooting, commissioning, and continuous improvement of industrial automation systems supporting airport operations.
Responsibilities include:
Controls Engineering & PLC Systems
- Design, develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC-based control systems supporting airport automation.
- Configure, troubleshoot, and support Allen-Bradley PLC platforms using Studio 5000 and related software.
- Diagnose PLC hardware, I/O systems, relays, and field devices to maintain reliable system performance.
- Develop and implement control system improvements that enhance operational efficiency and long-term system reliability.
- Support system commissioning, testing, validation, and operational improvements.
- Perform root cause analysis and implement permanent corrective actions.
Automation Systems Integration
- Design and integrate industrial automation solutions across electrical, mechanical, and controls systems.
- Configure and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), encoders, industrial sensors, and networked field devices.
- Configure industrial communication networks and support field device integration.
- Develop, troubleshoot, and support HMI and SCADA applications.
- Collaborate with Controls Field Technicians during installations, commissioning, troubleshooting, and system improvements.
Electrical & Controls Engineering
- Develop, review, and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and engineering documentation.
- Support control panel modifications, system upgrades, and electrical integration activities.
- Troubleshoot PLC hardware, I/O modules, motors, relays, and associated field devices.
- Verify system functionality through testing, commissioning, and field validation.
Project Execution
- Support automation projects from design through commissioning.
- Coordinate technical activities with Controls Field Technicians, Project Managers, customers, and airport operations personnel.
- Develop engineering documentation, reports, and technical deliverables.
- Promote engineering best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
We're looking for engineers with a strong technical foundation and a passion for industrial automation.
Qualified candidates should possess:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline (equivalent industry experience may be considered).
- Experience designing, programming, commissioning, or supporting industrial automation systems.
- Strong understanding of industrial automation systems, electrical controls, and PLC-based architectures.
- Ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical schematics, control drawings, and engineering documentation.
- Experience troubleshooting PLC hardware, electrical systems, field devices, and industrial communication networks.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
- Ability to obtain TSA SIDA access and successfully complete required background and drug screenings.

Work Environment
This position is based primarily at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, supporting Delta Air Lines' automated airport systems and infrastructure.
Engineers work in active operational environments where troubleshooting, commissioning, and system improvements must be completed safely while minimizing disruptions to airport operations.
Work may include mechanical spaces, electrical rooms, elevated work areas, and both indoor and outdoor environments. Operational schedules may occasionally require early mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, or extended hours based on project and customer needs.
Level Placement
This is a multi-level position (Levels I–III).
Placement is determined throughout the interview process based on technical knowledge, relevant experience, engineering capability, demonstrated troubleshooting ability, and overall alignment with the responsibilities of each level.
Candidates may be considered for the level that best matches their qualifications and experience.

Pay: $72,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
