Position Overview: The Model Shop Manager at Acuity Brands Lighting is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Model Shop, ensuring compliance with regulations, and driving continuous improvement in processes and team performance. This role involves managing a team of Model Makers, maintaining equipment and documentation, and collaborating with various departments to support business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Team Development:
- Conduct standardized interviews for Model Maker candidates.
- Define job requirements based on experience and title.
- Communicate training tools and maintain progress reports.
- Set performance and developmental goals.
- Engage employees daily and manage department priorities.
- Provide quarterly and year-end performance reviews.
- Allocate compensation budget.
- Maintain an “Open Door” policy to educate customers on Model Shop capabilities.
- Serve as a resource for engineering education.
- Maintain LP rotation syllabus and mentor LPs on Model Shop processes and business success.
Policy and Procedures:
- Comply with local, state, and federal regulations for material storage, use, and disposal.
- Implement regulations according to Acuity Brands, Inc. policy.
- Maintain and post a library of regulations, standard work, safety data sheets, and logs.
- Define training requirements for employees.
- Establish standard work for reporting and corrective actions.
- Develop policies for vendor identification and scoring to ensure optimal quality, price, and lead time.
- Conduct risk assessments for new suppliers and maintain supplier scorecards.
Business Continuity:
- Maintain detailed equipment documentation, including purchasing processes, supplier details, maintenance schedules, and contracts.
- Highlight the positive impacts of the model shop on the company, such as launches and R&D.
- Assess risks and establish business continuity plans.
- Maintain model maker job descriptions and a succession plan.
- Keep a library of hardware specifications and software.
- Manage documentation control.
- Maintain a library of emergency procedures and personal protective equipment usage.
- Keep a library of internal financial records.
Service the Matrix Organization:
- Maintain a line card.
- Develop and manage a process for prototype requests, including lead times, pickup/drop-off requirements, standards guidance, and feedback for rejected requests.
- Collect and analyze project data using Microsoft Power Platform to generate key performance indicators and detailed metrics.
- Use data insights to manage and improve business operations.
- Set and adjust KPIs based on gathered data to help customers plan project schedules.
- Utilize data to identify failing processes or high costs, and consider internal investment.
- Evaluate insourcing vs. outsourcing options.
- Leverage insights from service metrics to inform financial strategies.
Capital & Expense Planning:
- Develop capital and expense plans using business intelligence tools, considering gross sales, margin percentage, product vitality, supplier quotations, asset life, and spending periods.
- Collaborate with the finance team to produce ROI analyses and route documentation through the Delegation of Authority.
- Write business cases, including executive summaries, trade-off matrices, and supporting factors.
- Finalize price, delivery, and payment terms with the sourcing team.
- Coordinate with the legal department for contract requirements.
- Work with the facilities team to arrange utility services for new equipment and manage disposal of obsolete equipment.
Internal Operations & Material Planning:
- Maintain safety, employee training, and maintenance records to ensure safe forklift operation.
- Implement safe material handling practices and explore efficiency improvements.
- Manage the material inventory system for all consumables to ensure quick prototype turnaround.
- Coordinate with facilities to properly store and connect 80-pound compressed air cylinders.
- Collaborate with facilities maintenance to dispose of waste, including scrap contaminated with cutting fluids, according to Acuity policies.
- Implement dust abatement measures for grinding and welding, and ensure eye safety.
- Manage perishable materials, such as powder paint.
- Align process capabilities with POMs and maintain a tooling catalog.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in managing a model shop or similar environment.
- Strong leadership and team development skills.
- In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to material storage and disposal.
- Proficiency in using business intelligence tools and Microsoft Power Platform.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to conduct risk assessments and develop business continuity plans.
Educational Requirements:
- Specialized manufacturing certificates such as: SOLIDWORKS CSWA, CNC programming and machine operation certifications, and additive manufacturing, or demonstration of high competence of any.
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, industrial design, manufacturing, or a related field a plus.
Experience Requirements:
- 5-7 years of experience in a model shop, prototyping, or manufacturing environment.
- 3-5 years of managerial experience, preferably in a similar setting.
- Proven track record of team development and performance management.
- Experience with business continuity planning and risk assessment.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to material storage and disposal.
- Proficiency in using business intelligence tools such as Microsoft Power Platform for data analysis and reporting, a plus.
- Strong background in capital and expense planning, including ROI analysis and business case development.

The range for this position is $83,00.00 to $111,000.00. Placement within this range may vary, depending on the applicant’s experience and geographic location.
