Lateral (POST certified Communications Officer) full-time pay is very competitive for the Atlanta-metro area and is subject to a review of years of experience, certifications, and languages spoken.
Annual full-time pay range: $45,410.62-$60,770.10. Increased potential starting salary for prior police dispatching experience, bilingual (Spanish-preferred), related certifications, college, and other related experience.
The Norcross Police Department is both a CALEA-accredited nationally recognized and State of Georgia certified full-service law enforcement agency, with an authorized strength of 53 sworn officers, 9 police communications officers (dispatchers), and other support staff, located in the metropolitan Atlanta area, servicing a very diverse population of approximately 20,000 residents.

Preferred requirements:
For lateral applicants, Peace Officer Standard and Training (POST) certification in good standing. Foreign language skills are preferred but not required.
Minimum Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age; no felony convictions; United States Citizen (POST requirement), High School diploma or GED.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia.
- Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (POST).
- Must hold or have the ability to obtain Georgia Basic Communications Officer training certification and have the ability to become GCIC certified.
- Must be able to work 24-hour on call assignments, overtime, weekends, and holidays, as well as 8-hour, 10-hour, 12-hour, and rotating shifts.
- Proven ability to effectively and professionally respond to crises and other emergency situations.
The purpose of this position is to protect life and property and enforce federal and state laws and local ordinances. Successful performance contributes to the safety and well-being of citizens and promotes the efficient and effective operation of the department. The incumbent in this position will handle routine, emergency, and/or complex situations within the police department. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: answering 911 emergency and non-emergency calls for service, providing dispatch services to police units in the field, and working independently in performing regularly assigned duties under the general orders of the Supervisor, Manager, Captain, or Chief.
Responsibilities include:
- Receives and processes 911 emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public and other public safety agencies; categorizes and prioritizes calls for service.
- Receives, monitors, and dispatches radio communications for emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Enters information into Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), such as calls for service from citizens and officer initiated communications.
- Dispatches the appropriate emergency personnel to incident locations.
- Maintains a continuous log of incoming radio calls.
- Assists the public by providing directions and information.
- Monitors cameras throughout the city, within City Hall, and the Police Department. Makes notifications as needed.
- Monitors city parks via cameras/emergency callbox phones; dispatches emergency personnel as needed.
- Participates in coordinating emergency responses and assistance from external agencies.
- Monitors, operates, and manages complex emergency communications and computer equipment simultaneously.
- Monitors and routes incoming messages from national and state computer networks; enters and removes information as requested into NCIC and GCIC networks, including warrants, as well as information on missing persons and stolen property; validates information as required.
- Assists officers on duty by using the GCIC and NCIC computers to run criminal and license histories and relaying messages.
- Monitors and conducts daily tests of communication equipment for optimal performance. Reports any malfunctions that need repair or maintenance.
- Testifies in court.
- Attends all required departmental training annually.
- Maintains daily contact with senior citizens in the Senior Watch Program and dispatches officers as needed.
- May perform miscellaneous duties such as entering data from police reports to computer and gathering information for officers.
- Assists with the bonding process as needed.
