Clinical Director

Location: Hampton Roads, VA
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

The Mason Counseling Group is seeking an experienced, strategic, and highly motivated Clinical Director to lead and oversee the clinical operations of our growing behavioral health organization. The Clinical Director will provide leadership across our mental health, substance use, crisis, outpatient, community-based, and residential programs while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, person-centered care.

This position requires an individual with extensive experience in behavioral healthcare, strong operational leadership, and a thorough understanding of Virginia's regulatory environment. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader who is passionate about developing staff, improving clinical outcomes, and maintaining excellence in compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related behavioral health field.
Licensed in Virginia (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, or equivalent) or license eligible.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership experience within behavioral health programs.
Five (5) or more years of direct experience working with ASAM levels of care and mental health treatment programs.
Demonstrated knowledge of:
Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) regulations
Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) requirements
Medicaid documentation and billing requirements
Licensing, accreditation, quality improvement, and compliance standards
Exceptional clinical writing skills are required, including experience reviewing, developing, and ensuring the quality of assessments, ASAM evaluations, biopsychosocial assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, utilization reviews, and documentation supporting medical necessity and regulatory compliance.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide clinical leadership and oversight for all behavioral health programs within the organization.
Ensure all programs operate in compliance with DBHDS, DMAS, Medicaid, HIPAA, and applicable state and federal regulations.
Develop, implement, and continuously improve clinical policies, procedures, workflows, and best practices.
Oversee the quality of all clinical documentation to ensure it meets DBHDS, DMAS, Medicaid, ASAM, and organizational standards.
Conduct regular documentation audits and provide feedback, coaching, and corrective action to improve clinical writing and documentation quality.
Provide supervision, coaching, mentoring, and performance management for clinical leadership and staff.
Build and maintain a positive culture focused on accountability, collaboration, professional development, and quality care.
Monitor program performance through audits, quality assurance activities, utilization reviews, and clinical outcome measurements.
Oversee ASAM implementation, documentation quality, treatment planning, assessments, clinical supervision, and discharge planning.
Assist with program development, implementation of new services, and expansion initiatives.
Ensure readiness for licensing reviews, audits, and inspections.
Collaborate with executive leadership on strategic planning, operational improvements, staffing needs, and organizational growth.
Review incident reports, risk management issues, corrective action plans, and quality improvement initiatives.
Provide consultation and guidance regarding complex clinical cases.
Foster strong relationships with referral sources, community partners, hospitals, and state agencies.
Promote evidence-based practices and continuous quality improvement throughout the organization.
