Phlebotomy Technician – Donor Center
Location: Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Portsmouth, VA
Employer: US Got People (USGP)

USGP is seeking a committed and qualified Phlebotomy Technician to join the Donor Center at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a federal healthcare setting, support our military community, and grow your career.

Position Highlights

Monday–Friday schedule: 7:30am-4pm (may work occasional weekends)
Competitive hourly pay: $17.75 + Health and Welfare stipend

Qualifications

Education

High school diploma or equivalent
Completion of a donor phlebotomy program accredited by The Joint Commission or College of American Pathologists (CAP)

Certifications

Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Registered as a phlebotomist with the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT)

Experience

Minimum of 12 months of phlebotomy experience after graduation within the past 36 months

Immunization Requirements (Must be current or able to obtain):

Hepatitis B (series and titer)
Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
Varicella (Chickenpox)
Tuberculosis (TB) test
Current Influenza (flu) vaccine
COVID-19 vaccine (if applicable)

Key Responsibilities

Perform standard and special phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, fingerstick, and heel-stick techniques
In-process patients, review documentation, and provide guidance throughout specimen collection
Assemble and prepare phlebotomy equipment according to procedure requirements
Interview donors, take vital signs, and draw/test blood for donor screening
Train and supervise new staff or volunteers in phlebotomy procedures
Maintain cleanliness and inventory of the phlebotomy area; document all samples per SOP
Educate patients on specimen collection procedures and requirements
Conduct CLIA-waived tests (e.g., pregnancy tests) per FDA and lab standards
Ensure compliance with military and laboratory regulations (AABB, CAP, CLIA, JCAHO)
Assist in all aspects of mobile blood drives, including setup, donor registration, blood collection, and site breakdown
Monitor donors for reactions and initiate emergency procedures if necessary
Perform donor apheresis, blood processing, labeling, inventory, and shipment
