Reports to: Executive Director
Status: Full Time
Salary: $55,000 to $62,000 per year, commensurate with experience
Location: Flexible within Alabama, Birmingham or Montgomery preferred

In this role, you will help grow a community of members, supporters, and partners in Central Alabama who want a cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable energy future in Alabama. This position will help build our membership, strengthen our presence in Central Alabama communities, and turn supporters into sustained power for policy wins.

The Position:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Community Engagement & Membership Associate helps build and grow Energy Alabama’s membership and community presence, with your work concentrated in Central Alabama. You will carry out the day-to-day work and help maintain the systems that bring in new members, keep current members engaged, and deepen partnerships with trusted community organizations, working closely with the Executive Director to set priorities and goals. You will also work with communications, education, and policy team members to connect community energy priorities to our public education and advocacy work.

This role blends two distinct skill sets: relationship-based organizing and membership program support. We do not expect every candidate to arrive equally strong in both, but you should be genuinely energized by both kinds of work, not just tolerant of the one you like less.

This role executes based on content developed by the Education or Policy Manager. Your job is building relationships and getting that material in front of people. When a conversation in the community surfaces a question or gap the existing materials do not cover well, flag it so our materials stay accurate and consistent.

This role is not responsible for managing or directing staff. This role executes against the plan set with the Executive Director and provides regular field input to help shape it. You will regularly coordinate with Energy Alabama members and our partner organizations, on activities such as hosting events that focus on energy issues or seeking feedback from members.

The ideal candidate is an outstanding relationship-builder who can meet people where they are and move them to action by sharing information about our education and policy work. You are comfortable supporting programs as they grow, running community events, and keeping good data so we know what is working. You understand that Energy Alabama’s work sometimes involves taking on powerful interests and can create dynamic situations from time to time.

A Week in the Role:

Tabling at a farmers market, orienting a new member, sitting in on a public meeting, reaching new audiences with partners.

Compensation and Benefits:

$55,000–$62,000/yr, commensurate with experience
Full-time exempt, 40 hours per week
Generous leave policy and 12 holidays

Key Results Areas:

Support and help grow Energy Alabama’s membership program, including recruitment, onboarding, renewals, and retention, following priorities set with the Executive Director.
Build community presence in Central Alabama by developing relationships with community leaders, local groups, and allies.
Plan and staff community events, tabling, and member gatherings that bring new people into the work.
Work with the communications team to turn community stories and priorities into effective outreach and advocacy.
Deliver Energy Alabama’s public education materials and messaging in the community as developed by the Education or Policy Manager, and flag new questions or content gaps so materials stay current.
Support the Education Manager in launching Energy Alabama’s volunteer program, handling logistics and day-to-day coordination.
Maintain clean, useful membership data and tracking in EveryAction, and report on progress.
Support campaign mobilization, including member calls, emails, testimony, and rapid response outreach when needed.
Help implement engagement strategies identified by the Executive Director, and report on what is working.

About You:

1 to 3 years of related experience in community engagement, organizing, membership growth, or nonprofit advocacy. Candidates with deep experience in only one of these areas, but a clear track record, are still encouraged to apply.
Experience supporting programs that grow and retain members is especially valued.
Passion for clean energy and a commitment to fairness and affordability for everyday customers.
Commitment to learning and staying current on the energy and utility policy at the focus of our work, so you can communicate it clearly to the public, our supporters, and our members.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to speak comfortably with a wide range of people.
Willing to travel regularly within Central Alabama, with occasional statewide travel and some weekend work required.
Reliable and organized, with a track record of following through on assignments and closing loops.
Highly organized and comfortable with technology such as Zoom, Slack, Google Workspace, and CRM tools.
Comfortable tracking progress against goals and suggesting improvements to outreach tactics.
Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Naturally curious, outgoing, and resourceful.
