Full Job Description

Assistant Controller

HAPPI Health is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to help ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the organization’s financial records.

This position serves as the lead technical accountant and works closely with the Chief Financial Officer to support month-end and year-end close, financial reporting, account reconciliations, audits, grant accounting, healthcare revenue reconciliation, and internal controls.

The ideal candidate is analytical, detail-oriented, and able to independently manage assigned responsibilities, investigate discrepancies, recommend solutions, and follow work through to completion.

Essential Responsibilities

Lead assigned portions of the monthly and year-end close processes.
Prepare and review journal entries, general ledger transactions, financial statements, and supporting schedules.
Reconcile balance-sheet accounts, including cash, bank accounts, credit cards, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll liabilities, prepaid expenses, accruals, fixed assets, and leases.
Investigate and resolve account variances, aged reconciling items, and reporting discrepancies.
Maintain the general ledger, chart of accounts, and financial reporting structures by location, department, program, grant, and service line.
Reconcile patient service revenue, cash receipts, accounts receivable, contractual adjustments, and revenue-cycle reports to the general ledger.
Reconcile payroll expenses, payroll liabilities, benefit deductions, and related general ledger accounts.
Support grant and restricted-fund accounting, including expenditure tracking, reconciliations, reporting, and documentation.
Assist with budget preparation, financial analysis, forecasting, and variance reporting.
Support annual financial statement audits, grant audits, and regulatory reviews by preparing schedules and documentation.
Provide oversight and technical guidance for Accounts Payable activities, including coding, vendor records, payment processing, and approval compliance.
Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and internal financial policies.
Support and optimize Sage Intacct processes, reports, workflows, and system controls.
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, internal controls, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency.
Perform other accounting and finance duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
Five or more years of progressive accounting experience.
At least three years of experience supporting or independently managing significant portions of the monthly close process.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and accrual-basis accounting.
Experience preparing financial statements and performing complex account reconciliations.
Experience with general ledger accounting, Accounts Payable, fixed assets, accruals, and prepaid expenses.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and experience working with SAGE Intacct, UKG Ready for workforce integrations)
Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Sage Intacct experience.
Healthcare, nonprofit, community health center, or FQHC experience.
Experience with healthcare revenue reconciliation, grant accounting, restricted funds, or federal awards.
Experience supporting external audits or regulatory reviews.
CPA designation or progress toward certification.
