Job Summary: The Director of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) is a key leadership role responsible for shaping and sustaining a comprehensive safety culture across a geographically dispersed workforce of over 3,000 employees operating within the janitorial and security services sectors. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), this position provides strategic vision and operational direction for all EHS-related activities, including policy development, compliance oversight, risk mitigation, and incident management. The Director leads a dedicated EHS team, aligns safety initiatives with corporate objectives, and ensures adherence to federal, state, and local regulatory standards. With significant influence on organizational performance, this role promotes continuous improvement in environmental stewardship, employee well-being, and operational excellence, while fostering a proactive and accountable safety culture across all levels of the company.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
- Champion a safety-first culture across all business units, integrating Sizemore’s core values of Flexibility, Improvement, Reliability, Safety, and Teamwork into daily operations.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive EHS strategy aligned with organizational goals and ISO 45001 standards to drive continuous improvement and risk reduction.
- Provide guidance and support to senior leadership on EHS issues, influencing strategic decisions and organizational performance.
- Build, lead, and mentor a team of EHS professionals, promoting staff development and consistent execution of safety standards.
Policy Development & Compliance
- Create, implement, and maintain EHS policies, procedures, and programs that align with regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, MSHA, ANSI) and industry best practices.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable EHS laws and regulations; ensure consistent compliance across all facilities.
- Manage contractor safety platforms (e.g., Avetta, ISNetworld).
Site Engagement & Operational Support
- Conduct regular on-site safety inspections and hazard assessments in collaboration with site managers and field leadership.
- Develop and support site-specific safety programs, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and tailored training to address location-specific risks.
- Serve as a resource to location and regional managers, assisting in identifying hazards and implementing effective controls.
Incident Management & Risk Mitigation
- Lead investigations of incidents, injuries, near misses, and environmental events; conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain regulatory reporting systems for incidents and illnesses, ensuring timely and accurate submissions to agencies.
- Coordinate with Workers Compensation administrator and leadership to support return-to-work initiatives and ensure proper claims handling and reporting.
Training, Communication & Culture Building
- Design and evaluate EHS training programs across all operational levels, ensuring compliance and enhancing safety competency.
- Foster a culture of accountability and transparency through effective communication, leadership, and engagement.
- Coordinate emergency action plans (e.g., fire drills, evacuation procedures, spill response) as appropriate.
Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement
- Establish, monitor, and report on key safety performance indicators (KPIs); communicate findings to senior management and cross-functional leadership.
- Facilitate safety committee meetings with representatives from EHS, HR, Operations, and Workers Compensation and the workforce to improve the safety management program, review safety trends and performance.
- Drive continuous improvement in safety procedures, training, and preventive measures through data analysis, industry benchmarking, and associate feedback.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in risk management, industrial safety and health, environmental science, safety engineering, safety management preferred or closely related field. CSP or ASP certification a plus.
- Prefer 10+ years of industrial safety experience with 5+ years of safety management in operating environments with multi-site locations.
- Proven record of successfully developing and implementing comprehensive EHS programs.
- In-depth knowledge of US Safety practices and policies, as well as extensive knowledge of federal and state EHS regulations.
- Experience with Safety Management Systems such as ISO 45001, ANSI Z10, OSHA VPP.
- Experience in Risk Management, sustainability, and environmental compliance is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to mentor, coach and train.
- Key competencies include leadership, communication, problem-solving, coaching, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Working Conditions:
- Majority of work will be performed in climate-controlled environments.
- Prolonged working at a desk.
- Hands-on approach/frequent field visits (travel up to 40%).
- Significant local day trips; potentially overnight (up to 20%).

Pay: $100,000.00 per year
