Full Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Fiber Optic Splicer I to join our Fiber Operations team.

The Fiber Splicer I is responsible for preparing, splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and documenting fiber optic facilities within telecommunications networks. The ideal candidate will have hands-on fiber splicing experience, a working knowledge of outside-plant fiber networks, and the ability to perform quality work safely with limited supervision.

This position requires field work in a variety of environments, including splice trailers, telecommunications facilities, underground structures, aerial locations, and active construction areas.

Responsibilities

Prepare and splice fiber optic cable.
Perform single-fiber fusion splicing.
Perform ribbon fiber preparation and splicing when qualified.
Build, organize, and maintain fiber splice enclosures.
Read and interpret fiber prints, splice diagrams, and construction documents.
Operate fusion splicers, OTDRs, optical power meters, and related fiber test equipment.
Perform OTDR testing and identify common fiber faults and loss events.
Troubleshoot damaged, broken, crossed, or incorrectly assigned fibers.
Verify fiber continuity and optical performance.
Complete accurate splice documentation, test records, and daily production reports.
Track and communicate daily production and materials used.
Identify and report discrepancies between prints and actual field conditions.
Maintain assigned tools, test equipment, vehicles, trailers, and work areas.
Safely operate company vehicles and tow/back trailers when qualified.
Work from ladders, bucket trucks, aerial lifts, splice trailers, vaults, and other telecommunications facilities.
Follow all company safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, construction personnel, and other project stakeholders.

Qualifications

Minimum 2 years of fiber optic splicing experience preferred.
Hands-on experience with fusion splicing equipment.
Working knowledge of OTDR testing.
Ability to read fiber prints and splice diagrams.
Knowledge of fiber optic color codes, cable preparation, and splice enclosure organization.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Ability to safely operate company vehicles.
Ability to tow and back trailers when required.
Experience working from bucket trucks, aerial lifts, or similar equipment preferred.
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and electronic field documentation.
Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Must successfully complete applicable pre-employment and/or customer-required drug and alcohol screening.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

Lift and manipulate fiber cable, splice enclosures, tools, and associated equipment.
Stand, sit, bend, kneel, climb, and reach throughout the workday.
Perform detailed and repetitive hand movements associated with fiber preparation and splicing.
Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Work in confined or enclosed spaces when required.
Work safely at elevated heights using approved equipment.
Travel to assigned project locations.
