Job Summary
The Axel Group is partnering with a highly established General Contractor / Construction Manager that is actively building out its project team for a major, multi-year, technically complex construction project in Atlanta, Georgia.
The team is intentionally keeping the search broad from a title perspective and is considering construction professionals across the Project Engineer, Senior Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, and earlier-career Project Manager range. They are much more focused on identifying the right construction professionals than forcing candidates into a predetermined title. The eventual title, level of responsibility, and overall package can be structured around the individual’s experience, technical background, and where they currently sit in their career.
This is a substantial, highly sophisticated project involving complex mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, specialty building systems, extensive coordination, commissioning, and technically demanding construction environments.
One of the biggest advantages of the opportunity is the long runway of the project. With multiple years of work ahead, individuals joining the team will have the opportunity to become deeply involved in the project, take ownership of increasingly significant scopes, and continue developing as the job progresses.
This is not an opportunity where someone is expected to come in at one title and remain there for the duration of the project. Strong performers will have the ability to take on greater responsibility, manage larger scopes, develop their project management skill set, and continue progressing toward the next level throughout the life of the project. A Project Engineer coming onto the team today could grow into Senior PE or APM-level responsibilities. A Senior PE or APM could continue developing toward Project Manager or Superintendent responsibilities. Someone already beginning to operate at the PM level can also be considered.
Candidates coming from life sciences, laboratories, pharmaceutical, biotech, healthcare, mission-critical, advanced manufacturing, federal, institutional, or other large-scale and technically complex construction environments are strongly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will vary based on experience and level, with individuals given increasing ownership as they develop within the project team.
Typical responsibilities may include:
- Support and coordinate day-to-day project execution alongside Project Managers, Superintendents, and project leadership
- Manage RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, project documentation, and document control
- Review construction drawings, specifications, subcontractor scopes, and contract requirements
- Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, consultants, design teams, engineers, and field personnel
- Assist with or manage change orders, pricing, scope revisions, and change management
- Maintain project logs and track RFIs, submittals, procurement items, design issues, and outstanding decisions
- Assist with subcontractor buyout, procurement, material tracking, and long-lead equipment
- Coordinate architectural, structural, MEP, controls, and specialty building systems
- Participate in subcontractor, design, owner, coordination, and project management meetings
- Assist with project scheduling and track critical milestones and activities
- Work closely with field leadership to identify and resolve constructability, sequencing, and coordination issues
- Support permitting, inspections, testing, commissioning, turnover, and closeout
- Assist with cost tracking, forecasting, subcontractor management, and project financial documentation depending on experience
- Maintain communication between the office, field, subcontractors, design professionals, and project stakeholders
- Support quality control efforts and ensure work is performed in accordance with plans and specifications
- Develop strong working relationships with subcontractors, vendors, ownership, design professionals, and internal project teams
- Take ownership of increasingly complex project scopes and management responsibilities as the project progresses
Qualifications
- Approximately 2+ years of commercial construction experience preferred, with level evaluated individually
- Previous experience as a Project Engineer, Senior Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, Project Manager, Field Engineer, or similar construction management professional
- Experience supporting or managing large-scale and technically complex construction projects
- Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, scopes of work, and project documentation
- Experience coordinating subcontractors, vendors, consultants, and multiple construction scopes
- Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced and technically demanding project environment
- Experience with life sciences, laboratories, pharmaceutical, biotech, healthcare, mission-critical, advanced manufacturing, institutional, federal, or highly MEP-intensive projects is highly valued
- Experience with complex MEP coordination, controls, commissioning, startup, turnover, or specialty building systems is a plus
- Proficiency with construction management and documentation platforms such as Procore, Bluebeam, Autodesk, or similar systems is preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related discipline is preferred, but equivalent construction experience will also be considered

This search is intentionally broader than one specific title. The contractor is considering candidates across what could best be described as the PE-to-PM spectrum, including:
- Project Engineer
- Senior Project Engineer
- Assistant Project Manager
- Senior Assistant Project Manager
- Earlier-career Project Manager
The team is not overly concerned with what someone’s business card says today. They are evaluating each candidate based on project experience, technical capability, communication skills, leadership potential, and the level of responsibility they are ready to take on.
Just as importantly, the title someone enters with does not need to be the title they hold throughout the project. With several years of project runway, there is a real opportunity to grow with the job rather than simply work on it. Individuals who perform well can continue taking on larger scopes, increasing their exposure to project leadership, and moving toward greater project management responsibility.
Compensation & Relocation
There is meaningful flexibility around the overall compensation package.
The contractor is not attempting to fit every candidate into one rigid compensation band. Depending on experience, current level, technical background, relocation needs, and what it would realistically take for the right person to make a move, the team has the ability to structure a competitive overall opportunity.
For particularly strong candidates, there is flexibility to be aggressive in putting together a package that makes sense.

Pay: $105,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
