Fleet Mechanic – Job Description
The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and ensuring the operational readiness of Abel Fire Equipment’s entire fleet. This includes trucks of all sizes (mini vans to semi trucks), trailers (landscape trailer to double expanding semi trailers), generators (2kw - 180kw), light towers, and a wide range of support equipment used in emergency response and basecamp operations.
This role is hands-on and detail-oriented, requiring strong mechanical and electrical expertise. The Fleet Mechanic ensures that every asset is safe, reliable, and Ready-to-Roll at all times. From preventative maintenance to complex diagnostics, this position plays a direct role in AFE’s ability to respond quickly and perform in the field.
Must also be able to support jobs in the field. This means being able to deploy to at least 70% of jobs when asked, and stay for at least 2 weeks. All positions must understand and be willing to support all other divisions if and when needed.
Some responsibilities below are outsourced when it makes operational and economical sense, it is the Fleet Mechanics responsibility to help coordinate and execute this.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Readiness
- Maintain all fleet assets including trucks, trailers, generators, light towers, and all support equipment.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and longevity.
- Conduct pre- and post-deployment inspections to verify readiness.
- Ensure all fleet assets meet AFE safety and operational standards prior to use.
- Managing smogs, insurance, and registration is up to date in vehicles.
Mechanical & Electrical Repairs
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems across a wide variety of equipment.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting using systematic diagnostic methods.
- Complete wiring installations, repairs, and modifications for trailers and equipment.
- Repair and service engines, pumps, generators, braking systems, and suspension components.
Trailer & Towing Systems
- Inspect, repair, and adjust trailer brake systems (electric, hydraulic, and air).
- Install and troubleshoot wiring harnesses, connectors, and lighting systems.
- Ensure trailers are compliant with DOT and safety standards.
- Verify proper hitching systems, couplers, safety chains, and load balance.
Inspections & Compliance
- Perform BIT inspections and ensure all fleet vehicles remain compliant with regulations.
- Maintain accurate inspection logs, service records, and repair documentation.
- Track maintenance intervals and ensure timely completion of required services.
- Prepare equipment for audits, inspections, and field deployment standards.
Generator & Equipment Testing
- Perform generator diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance.
- Conduct load banking to verify generator performance and reliability.
- Troubleshoot power distribution issues and electrical output inconsistencies.
- Ensure all generators and power equipment are tested and ready for deployment.
Data Tracking & Project Coordination
- Track all maintenance, repairs, and parts usage in the AFE app or designated systems.
- Plan and prioritize repair projects based on urgency and operational needs.
- Coordinate with vendors and outside repair shops when necessary.
- Maintain inventory of parts, tools, and consumables required for fleet upkeep.
- Must be able to proficiently use a computer along with spreadsheets and docs (google based).
Shop Operations & Safety
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow all AFE safety protocols, PPE requirements, and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Properly store tools, equipment, and hazardous materials.
- Identify and report safety hazards within the yard or shop.
Additional Responsibilities
- Mount tires (preferred skill).
- Assist with equipment staging and preparation for deployments.
- Support field repairs or emergency response operations when required.
- Provide input on equipment improvements, upgrades, and standardization.
- Assist in training team members on basic maintenance procedures.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 - 5+ years of experience as a mechanic working on trucks, trailers, or heavy equipment.
- Strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic skills.
- Experience with trailer systems, brake systems, and wiring installations.
- Familiarity with generators, power systems, and load banking procedures.
- Experience performing BIT inspections and maintaining compliance records.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple repair projects.
- Strong organization and documentation skills.
- Valid driver’s license with clean record; Class A or B preferred.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physically demanding work.

Pay: $30.00 - $50.00 per hour
