Full Job Description

Whittier College is an independent, four-year Liberal Arts College distinguished by its small size (1600 undergraduates) and a nationally recognized liberal arts program. Whittier College has a history of strong and innovative interdisciplinary programs and a diverse student body. The College is ideally situated in the scenic hills eighteen miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

Director, Wardman Library

The Wardman Library at Whittier College is seeking a Director. The Director of the Wardman Library will be a visionary and entrepreneurial leader with a record of working within a team setting, motivating staff, and developing a strategic plan for the library that inventories its assets, strengths, and benefits to the Whittier College community. The Director will be responsible for focusing on building Whittier College's library for the future by uniting current strengths with new and emerging technologies (AI or otherwise), information literacy initiatives, and exploration and implementation of shared services (e.g., through consortia, networks, and partner agreements).

The Director will demonstrate strong managerial, organizational, and planning skills with the ability to supervise and manage a team of librarians as well as full-time staff members. The Director will lead the library in collaborating with faculty, staff, and administration campus wide. The Director will have experience developing budgetary practices that are inclusive and support excellence in delivering Wardman Library services.

Exempt Status: Exempt

Full Time/Part Time status: Full Time

Salary Range: $110,000-$115,000; Salary will commensurate with experience, skills, and knowledge.

Reports to: VP of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty

Location/Department: Whittier College (Main Campus)/Wardman Library

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions of the job:

Coordinates strategic planning efforts.
Explores and implements shared services.
Manages the library budget.
Develops and implements library policies.
Collaborates with librarians, IT, administration, and faculty to determine the library for the future while invigorating our space and services.
Oversees staff assignments, promotion applications, leaves of absence and other library personnel issues.
Promotes the professional growth of library staff members through participation in local or national professional organizations; manages funds for staff members to travel to conferences.
Maintains a current knowledge of the literature, information technology, and overall technology trends (esp. but not only in AI) in academic libraries and higher education via professional literature, continuing education, professional development, and communication with other libraries.
Participates with SCELC (Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium), the Oberlin Group of Libraries, and other possible consortia institutions and networks.
Coordinates an assessment of library services, spaces, and practices.
Develops and facilitates special programming in the library (i.e., author appearances) or coordinating other special events in cooperation with academic departments to foster a student-centered environment.
Leads information literacy through reference and instructional services, as needed
Oversees the management and development of the regular library collections as well as the Special Collections and College Archives.
Serves on faculty committee assignments, including ex officio role or roles on relevant faculty committees.
Prepares statistical reports as requested by the College, library organizations, or other educational agencies.
Performs additional duties as requested or authorized by the College administration.

Position Specifications and Requirements:

Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in an academic library with at least two years being in a supervisory role (e.g. an Associate Director with 2-3 years of experience, or a combination of experiences as an Associate and Assistant level would meet the qualifications).

Desirable:

An additional advanced degree from an accredited institution.
