Swim Aide
SUMMARY OF PURPOSE
This position is responsible for providing aquatics instructional support to students.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Assist physical education department with fulfilling aquatics program goals
2. Complete required district training programs
3. Strictly comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) confidentiality obligations
4. Adhere to daily duties and instructional schedules as established by the teacher and/or principal
5. Provide coverage in any/all district facilities as needed, including but not limited to: pool, locker rooms, classrooms, front office, health room, recess, lunch, arrival, and dismissal
6. Assist students to and from school buses and vehicles as needed
7. Recognize teacher and/or principal as having authority in managing all student programs
8. Act as a positive social and emotional role model for students

Ability to multi-task and adjust to ongoing changes in schedules and assignments
Aquatics Schedule:
Marking Period 1: High school building aide duties; no groups using the pool.
Marking Period 2: High school PE classes use pool. Mr. Conway and Mrs. Lowe lead instruction with Swim Aide support.
Marking Period 3: Middle school PE classes use pool. Mr. Speelman leads instruction with help from middle school PE teachers. Water safety lessons; lifeguard and first aid classes 3rd and 4th marking periods.
Marking Period 4: 2nd and 4th graders from all four elementary schools use the pool. Mr. Speelman leads instruction with Swim Aide support to smaller groups of either advanced or novice swimmers.
SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Maintain a high level of professionalism
2. Perform clerical, housekeeping and other duties as assigned by the teacher and/or principal
OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret written and verbal information. Must demonstrate effective communications with, and respond in a timely manner to, questions from administrators, staff, parents and the general public.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability: Able to solve practical problems and deal with several variables at once. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Other Required Skills and Abilities: Perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.
SCOPE AND IMPACT
This position accomplishes most tasks through standard procedure, exercising independent judgment when necessary. High-level contacts of a complex and confidential nature, both inside and outside the school district, are made. Internal contacts include students, District office staff, District administrators, teachers, and classified staff. External contacts include parents, community members, School Board members, and any other business or school related entities.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Active Red Cross Lifeguard certification required. High school diploma or equivalent. Basic computer competency skills are required. Experience working with children is desirable. The following clearances must be provided upon hire and updated every five years in accordance with Act 153: PA State Police-Act 34, Child Abuse- Act 151, and FBI Fingerprint-Act 114. Child Abuse training (or proof of completion) in accordance with Act 126 upon hire and repeated every five years thereafter. A negative TB test is required upon hire.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL
Activities: Swimming 70%, sitting 10%, walking/standing 20%, occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.

Mental Demands: Ability to interpret, analyze, problem solve; detailed written and verbal communications
Environment: Pool. Moderate noise level; Hot, cold, dry, wet conditions, blood-borne pathogens, indoor and outdoor conditions

This position is directly responsible to the assigned building principal and must take direction from the classroom teacher(s).
