Full Job Description

Reports to: Adult Day Care Director

General Position Overview: The Activity Specialist is responsible for designing and facilitating a wide range of therapeutic and engaging activities for older adults with early-stage memory impairment within the Intergenerational Adult Daycare setting. Programming will include music and movement, guided discussion groups, creative arts and crafts, reminiscence therapy, cognitive stimulation activities, and social engagement interventions tailored to support participants’ overall well-being. This role is part of a one-year pilot project funded by the Alzheimer’s Association Center for Development and Innovation, ending on June 30th, 2027. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, the Activity Specialist will lead structured, group-based therapeutic activities that promote physical health, cognitive functioning, emotional expression, and social connection. The position requires a strong understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, along with the ability to adapt activities to varying cognitive levels. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong group facilitation, creativity, and excellent communication skills, with a person-centered and compassionate approach to care.

Main Responsibilities:

Design, develop, and lead a dynamic, therapeutic activity program that is innovative, engaging, and tailored to the unique needs of participants living with early-stage cognitive impairment. Programming should emphasize creativity, cognitive stimulation, emotional expression, and meaningful social connection.
Create and facilitate a diverse range of activities, including creative arts, music and movement, reminiscence-based groups, sensory experiences, cognitive exercises, that promote dignity, independence, and participant engagement.
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to contribute to initial and ongoing participant assessments, ensuring activity programming aligns with individualized care plans, strengths, and evolving needs.
Engage participants and family caregivers in the development of meaningful, person-centered activity plans that reflect individual interests, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences.
Collaborate effectively with Intergenerational Program Specialist to implement intergenerational program activities.
Provide leadership, supervision, and guidance to volunteers and interns, effectively integrating them into program delivery to enhance the quality and variety of activities offered.
Work collaboratively with the Program Director, Activities Department, and Program Aide team to consistently deliver high-quality, engaging programming that supports therapeutic outcomes.
Manage activity-related resources, including maintaining inventory, and ensuring the availability of supplies that inspire creativity and participation.
Conduct pre-and post-assessments to evaluate changes in mood and cognition
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Two (2) years of experience in a social, recreational, or educational program within the past five years, including at least one (1) year of full-time experience in an activities program within a healthcare, mental health, or disability services setting; OR
Licensed or credentialed professional (e.g., Occupational Therapist, Art Therapist, Music Therapist, Dance/Movement Therapist, Recreation Therapist, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Social Worker, or Counselor).
Demonstrated experience working with older adults, particularly individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or related cognitive disorders.
Proven ability to design and implement engaging, therapeutic, and person-centered group programming for individuals with varying cognitive abilities.
Completion of Alzheimer’s Association training coursework (or willingness to complete upon hire).
Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain), and successful completion of required background clearance.

Skills/Aptitude:

Highly creative, innovative, and adaptable, with a passion for developing meaningful and enriching experiences for older adults.
Strong initiative and ability to independently lead and grow a comprehensive activity program.
Excellent group facilitation skills, with the ability to engage participants at different cognitive levels.
Effective teamwork and collaboration within a multidisciplinary environment.
Strong organizational, planning, and supervisory skills.
Ability to manage complex interpersonal dynamics with professionalism and sensitivity.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with Canva or similar design tools preferred.
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, with the ability to engage a diverse participant population

Working conditions: Working conditions are normal for an Adult daycare environment. Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds and be able to help people with daily activities such as using the bathroom. Must be ok with cleaning up after people.

Pay: $30.00 per hour
