Job Summary
The Transportation Manager will oversee and optimize the organization’s entire domestic transportation lifecycle—from carrier procurement and freight negotiation to daily dispatch, fleet routing, and operational execution. This role requires an industry expert with comprehensive knowledge of domestic transportation regulations, carrier networks, rate structures, and logistics technology. The ideal candidate will balance strategic procurement with hands-on operational management to lower freight costs, improve delivery performance, and build a resilient supply chain.
Key Responsibilities1. Strategic Freight Procurement & Carrier Management
- Contract Negotiation: Lead RFPs, rate negotiations, and service level agreements (SLAs) across all domestic modes (TL, LTL, Intermodal, Parcel, Dedicated).
- Carrier Selection & Network Development: Build and maintain a reliable, cost-effective carrier network across all domestic lanes.
- Performance Tracking: Manage carrier KPIs (On-Time Delivery, Tender Acceptance, Claims Ratio) and conduct quarterly business reviews (QBRs).
- Capacity Planning: Secure dedicated capacity during peak seasons and market disruptions.
2. Operations & Execution
- End-to-End Fleet/Freight Operations: Oversee daily dispatch, load planning, route optimization, and tracking from pickup to final delivery.
- Troubleshooting & Exception Management: Resolve transit delays, claims, freight damage, and accessorial charge disputes in real time.
- Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner with warehouse management, customer service, and procurement teams to align shipping schedules with production and sales demand.
3. Budgeting & Cost Control
- Financial Oversight: Manage the domestic transportation budget, monitor freight spend against forecast, and approve freight invoices.
- Cost Savings Initiatives: Identify freight consolidation opportunities, continuous moves, backhaul usage, and mode conversion (e.g., LTL to TL, TL to Intermodal).
4. Compliance & Technology
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure full adherence to DOT, FMCSA, state, and local transportation laws, safety standards, and driver regulations.
- TMS Management: Leverage Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and visibility platforms (e.g., FourKites, Project44) to automate routing, track shipments, and analyze performance data.
