Associate Director for Clinical Operations, Student Health Services
The Opportunity
Oberlin College and Conservatory - a top-ranking liberal arts college and world class conservatory of music in Ohio - is seeking an
experienced advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) to serve as its inaugural Associate Director of Clinical Operations in Student Health Services (SHS). Reporting to the Director of SHS, the Associate Director assists in managing the daily operations of Student Health, a role which includes clinical, outreach, and office functions. Under the Director's supervision, the Associate Director supports the coordination of overall operations and provides advanced clinical oversight and direct patient care, ensuring services align with best practice standards, ethical guidelines, and legal/regulatory requirements. The incumbent will foster a welcoming, student-centered, supportive atmosphere at Student Health for the delivery of advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for Oberlin's students in need of medical care and support. Oberlin enrolls just under 3,000 students, a large portion of whom used Student Health for approximately 2,500 appointments over the last academic year. Competitive candidates will have direct experience as an advanced practice provider in an active outpatient clinical setting; a Master's or Doctoral degree in nursing; significant administrative talent; a demonstrated commitment to ensuring the provision of high-quality, equitable, and accessible services that meet the needs of a diverse population; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; and demonstrated knowledge and skill in applying forward thinking and innovative approaches and best practices. A collaborative approach, attitude, and practice are essential for success both within SHS and between SHS and Oberlin's Counseling and Psychological Services for students, as well as with other campus partners and stakeholders.
About Student Health and Wellbeing & SHS
At Oberlin College and Conservatory, Student Health and Wellbeing is the primary source for health, wellness, and alcohol and drug-related health education, prevention, and harm-reduction services for students. Led by Assistant Vice President Andrew Oni, Student Health and Wellbeing is comprised of Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Health Promotion and Prevention Services. Each of the units has a director; and now there will be Associate Directors of Clinical Operations in both Student Health and CAPS. Each of those Associate Directors reports to the Director of their unit and holds responsibility for clinical administration and daily operations, coordination of services, and alignment of functions with mission, best practices and standards, and professional, ethical, and legal requirements.
This position combines administrative duties (30%), advanced clinical practice as a provider (40%), case management (10%), health promotion and campus outreach (10%), and interdisciplinary collaboration (10%). The position integrates key elements of student healthcare that interconnect with CAPS clinicians, Health Promotion and Prevention staff and programs, Student Affairs colleagues, and off-campus providers. With the parallel Associate Director in CAPS, this position shares responsibility for serving a diverse student population and supporting students' access to inclusive and culturally relevant clinical care.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
The Associate Director will:
- Assist the Director in operational workflows and administrative logistics of SHS.
- Oversee the management of Medicat (EHR) for clinical documentation and data management.
- Serve as a consultant to faculty, staff, students, and parents on clinical health matters.
- Assist the Director with the development of policies and procedures in adherence to accreditation standards, policies, and local, state, and federal regulations and licensing requirements.
- Assist in establishing departmental goals, objectives, policies, procedures, assessment practices, and strategic plans for services.
- Support the Director in coordination, consultation, and logistical coordination for crisis/liaison services.
- Assist with public health surveillance and outbreak response.
- Support and participates in quality improvement initiatives.
- Provide direct patient care, including comprehensive health assessments (history, physical examination, and diagnostic evaluation), diagnosis and management of acute and chronic medical conditions within scope of practice, and treatment of illnesses, injuries, and ongoing health concerns.
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests (labs, imaging, etc.).
- Prescribe medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions in accordance with Ohio APRN licensure and prescriptive authority.
- Maintain an appropriate independent or collaborative clinical caseload.
- Perform minor procedures within scope of practice.
- Lead coordination of care for students with complex medical and behavioral health needs.
- Develop and manages individualized care plans in collaboration with interdisciplinary providers.
- Serve as a primary clinical liaison with off-campus providers and specialists.
- Lead collaborative efforts with the Office of Health Promotion by integrating individual health education with
campus wide initiatives that foster a culture of wellbeing, inclusivity, and prevention.
- Collaborate closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, mental health clinicians, and
campus partners.
- Provide clinical consultation and guidance to staff and campus stakeholders.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- A Master's or doctoral degree in nursing
- Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in good standing in the State of Ohio
- National Board Certification in an APRN specialty (e.g., FNP, ANP, WHNP)
- Valid Ohio Certificate to Prescribe (CTP) and DEA licensure (or eligibility
- Certification in BLS/CPR (required); ACLS and/or public health or case management certifications preferred
- Two to five years of advanced clinical practice experience; college health, primary care, or community health settings strongly preferred
- Advanced clinical judgment, diagnostic reasoning, strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of client information obtained during care/treatment, in accordance with professional standards, HIPAA (Health Information Portability & Accountability Act), FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), and state regulations
- Demonstrated ability to model cultural competence, and experience working with students from underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds, including students of color and first-generation, low-income, LGBTQ+, and international students
