Communications Coordinator
The Jonnycake Center of Westerly is a nonprofit Community Resources Office, Food Pantry, and Thrift Store. We are seeking a creative, dynamic, diligent, and highly organized person to join our team as a Communications Coordinator. This is an on-site, full-time position primarily working Monday through Friday with some occasional evenings or weekends for events and meetings.
The Communications Coordinator will elevate our strategic messaging across multiple platforms. In this role, you will help shape our voice in our community, crafting content, managing media relations, ensuring our communications align with our mission and values, assisting the Executive Director and Board of Directors, and engaging with friends and donors through events. Your creativity, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills will drive engagement with diverse audiences and support our overall brand presence. Key Responsibilities
Grow and maintain the relationship between the Center and the public through all forms of media, including radio, print, imaging, and social media content, and provide administrative and operational support to the Executive Director.
Essential Duties
- Formulate, implement, and maintain communications strategies, policies, and brand identity to improve and ensure consistency across all communication and design platforms. Oversee improvement of and edit the Center’s website.
- Field inquiries from and establish regular communication with traditional media.
- Manage social media accounts, from scheduling to fan engagement and message responses.
- Acquire/produce, organize, and catalog photos, videos, created images, and social media content.
- Effectively utilize images and content for promotional projects for Center programs and events, and for community events and issues, including logos, images, flyers, newsletters, press releases, signage, and merchandise.
- Coordinate with Events Coordinator to attend community events to represent Jonnycake.
- Engage and build relationships with local businesses and media outlets.
- Collaborate with Senior Leadership to identify media opportunities and implement campaigns for Center programs and community issues.
- Assist and coordinate with Executive Director and Fundraising Department on appeals, fundraising campaigns, and new initiatives (traditional and digital), including developing copy, creating online and traditional content and press releases, procuring associated materials, and utilizing software for bulk emailing.
- Measure and report on the effectiveness of communications activities, engagement levels, and progress.
- Assist the Executive Director with drafting/proofreading communications, monitoring timelines and priorities, following up on action items, preparing Board and Committee notifications and meeting materials, research information to support organizational planning, and maintaining records.
- Assist with other direct support as needed to help fulfill our mission and abide by our organization’s values.
Education & Experience
- Minimum of Associate’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, or a related field (preferred) or equivalent professional experience
- 2+ years of related experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or a similar field
Requirements
- Working knowledge of design and communications applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and design software
- Experience creating and executing well thought out marketing and communications ideas and strategies
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Superior interpersonal skills
- Candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to work individually and in an integrated team environment.
- Demonstrated administrative, planning, and organization skills
- Creative thinker with an eye for detail and design
- Ability to take on responsibility and use initiative to prioritize and work effectively, under pressure and under tight deadlines with excellent time management skills
- Candidate will possess exceptional reliability, discretion, and sound judgment.
