Full Job Description

San Francisco Early Learning Alliance

The San Francisco Early Learning Alliance (SFELA) provides high quality business services exclusively for child care centers. SFELA is dedicated to enhancing the quality of childcare programs by offering efficient back-office services, enabling center leaders and staff to concentrate on what matters most: children, families, and teachers.

As a nonprofit organization, SFELA partners with childcare centers serving low-income children and families. SFELA works closely with each client center to identify operational challenges and provide customized business services, including accounting, enrollment support, child care subsidy management, data management, and reporting.

General Position Description

The SFELA Senior Accountant provides direct accounting and financial management services to SFELA client childcare centers. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting budgeting and financial reporting, ensuring compliance with government funding requirements, and assisting centers with financial operations and audits. The ideal candidate is an experienced nonprofit accountant who is committed to supporting early childhood education programs through strong financial stewardship and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

Directly support client centers with operational finance, including bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, monthly financial statements, and related accounting functions.
Advise client centers on profit and loss management through the development and implementation of effective fiscal systems, internal controls, and financial processes.
Interpret and implement changes in CA Department of Education and CA Department of Social Services government funding requirements and regulations affecting SFELA’s client centers.
Support client centers' annual independent audits, ensuring timely preparation and submission of required financial documentation.
Establish and maintain systems that support ongoing compliance with funding, reporting, and regulatory requirements.
Ensure transparency, accuracy, and completeness of financial records and supporting documentation.
Provide technical guidance and training to accounting staff, and perform quality review to ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance, and adherence to established accounting procedures.
Other projects and/or tasks as assigned by SFELA Director.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required

Dedication and commitment to the organization’s mission and values.
Minimum five (5) years of experience in nonprofit accounting.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
Strong financial acumen and commitment to operational excellence.
Experience in budgeting, financial planning, forecasting, fiscal management, financial reporting, and supporting audits or regulatory reviews.
Experience with navigating complex government regulatory environments and ensuring compliance with detailed policies and procedures.
Experience with government contracts, particularly local, state, and federal child care subsidy program or similar government-funded programs.
Experience with grants management and cost allocation methodologies.
Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Ability to build productive working relationships with client organizations.
Proficiency with QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Online, Xero, and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
Ability to operate with minimal supervision, with initiative and discretion.
Ability to prioritize tasks based on current timelines and manage competing priorities for multiple clients.
Ability to work in an in-person office setting.

Physical Requirements

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee frequently sits for extended periods of time, and occasionally stands, walks, talks/listens, stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls, and reaches with hands and arms. The employee occasionally lifts up to 20 lbs. Close and distance vision and manual dexterity to use a telephone and computer are required.
